1981 Ibanez Musician active/passive for $200 in 1989. Sounded like crap with active on, beautiful in passive but was too quiet. Since i'm a passive guy, I just recently put passive Bartolini humbuckers in it, new pots, a HAS Sound varitone control knob and flatwounds on it and it sounds amazing! But it is STILL much quieter than my other passive basses!

In the 70s I made one attempt to play bass and bought a 73ish P bass ... which I sold

When it really took about 12 years ago it was a G&L L2000 ... which I also sold

Then maybe a year later I bought this 68 P bass in Tupelo Miss for $500.00 ...

A 196? Hofner short scale. Looks like a mini jazz. It originally had a red 'snake skin' body covering but was refinished natural wood. Wish I had a pic, it's rare. Nephew now has it.

I rented a Hohner Rockwood Pro P-Bass copy for about 4 months and I guess that was my first bass. It was sunburst. It was old as heck, chips on the bottom edge of the body; the strings were so old that the G had indentations on it for every fret. Had I changed strings I probably would have liked the sound of the bass much more, but hey, it's a rental, why give them free strings? The pickup under the D string always made a "tssk" (like you do with your tongue when you are disappointed, but quieter) noise whenever I touched it with my finger. Of course, I only returned that three weeks ago, and am in the process of BUYING a bass for myself. Squier VM Jazz Bass anyone? I think yes. Played it in the music store for an entire hour, entranced by the wonderful bright tone.
