What was your first bass guitar?

Mid 90's Fender American Deluxe fretless. Bought it for about $800 from Guitar Center with money I had saved all summer working and doing gigs on guitar.

I bought a fretless because I thought with a fretless bass guitar I would'nt have to play upright anymore. Boy, was I wrong...

I got Encore P-bass copy for x-mas 1993. It sucks. I bought Washburn XB500 2yrs later and I still use it!
I plan to make the Encore fretless and maybe throw in DiMarzio pups, maybe a new bridge too.

My first bass was a fretted SR500. That bass became my first fretless after I bought my Modulus fretted. I kept it around for a few years and finally sold it for something like $500.. which was roughly what I paid for it.

Samick Jazz bass that I ordered out of some military mail order catalog that my father had. Still have no idea why I did not go 15 minutes to the local store and buy one...

Mine was a Conrad back in '68. Don't have a clue as to the model -- it was a reddish sunburst hollow body complete with F holes...

Ended up trading that on an EKO violin bass with a funny square pedestal rising up from the headstock.

My first bass was a RBX200 as well, cept it was tomato red so I just had to get rid of it, but it laid the foundation for my style now, so I respect it

The first bass I played for an extended time, atlthough it wasn't mine, was a Fender Precision. The high school I went to owned it and as there wasn't anyone in the school who actually played bass, the let me use it for a year. In fact, they never asked for it back and, being the young hoodlum I was, I just kept it after graduation. They ended up hunting me down about a year later and asked for it back. I'll never forget the look on the musical director's face when I finally brought it in.

Anyway, since I knew my days with the P-bass were probably numbered, I bought a Rickenbacker 4001 sometime before that.

a us fender bullet, 30" scale

brand spanky new!!!! about 16 yrs ago.

after the stubby 30", my first 34" bass felt as long as a year!!!!!!

Same bass I use now. Ibanez ICM300 Iceman. I'm putting a Kahler trem on it, maybe swapping out the PUPs, and thinking of putting a Sustainer in it. I'm pretty happy with The Big Ugly, I can't see myself needing another bass. Well, okay, maybe a fretless.

My first was an older Tokai P-bass with maple neck and fretboard and clear finish. I believe it was one of the lawsuit basses. It was a good bass, I just wanted a more modern sound. I sold it on ebay about 6 months ago for very good money

Squier Jazz Bass. Pretty decent, but then I got the fretless hair up my a$$, so I had it defretted and loaded with EMG's. Talk about good money after bad!

The bass I started on belonged to my high school jazz band. It was a Peavey POS-40, or T-40, or something like that.

The first bass I really owned was a Carvin V440T with the Kahler bass tremolo. It was black with chrome hardware.

A Squier P Bass special in 3 color sunburst. Ooh... the top of the line squier bass...

I upgraded it with a Badass II bridge and some Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound for P Bass pickups, and took it to a veteran luthier in Philadelphia to have it set up. Its actually pretty nice now...








HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

But soon I will have a Stingray, and that will be a great day in the life of lo-end.

I had a Candy apple red Squier P-bass, it was ok starter but i wouldnt recommend it over some of the better low end basses out there now

I had a Magnum Jazz Bass copy that I traded an Iron Maiden record and set of cheap stereo speakers for. It looked just like the reissue '75 Jazz that Fender has out now, right down to the black position markers. I was heart broken when the G tuner was bumped and bent. I tried to bend it back and it broke off! Instead of turning into a Tony Levin wannabe, I dirfted away from bass and came back a few years later with a Hondo II P-bass copy. Metallic green with matching headstock and maple fretboard and brass bridge. It was a decent bass, but somehow the controls were both wired to be volume controls!?!?! I upgraded it with EMG Selects and a HipShot Xtender, but sold it for $100 after I bought a MIM Standard P-Bass.

Back the first time around "playing" bass, I didn't have one of my own. Instead, I played a Ric and a Guild Starfire belonging to my friend's father.

Twenty years later, I bought a DeArmond Starfire to get back into bass because I couldn't afford a Guild. I'm still happy with the DeA, and even happier with my new/old Ric.

although I doubt anyone who reads these is old enough to remember them, my first bass was a Fender Bullet, which I leased for about 9 months before buying an '82 Jazz. I've modified the old J-Bass (Bartolini passives, Starrs one piece machined bridge, graphite fretless neck to cope with the brutal Kentucky humidity...), but I still have her and she's sweeter than ever. I call her 'the wife'. I think my wife understands...

Mine was a mid 60's P-bass in a factory Champange sparkle finish. I couldn't afford to pay for her so back she went. Wonder what it's would be worth now?
