I got a practice pad and a pair of drumsticks from my grandmother when I was ~5 or 6 years old. My neighbor was a professional jazz drummer and he gave me a few pointers (and some of his old sticks) and sometime around age 7 or 8 me and my friends started a band where I played "drums" ...which really consisted of the aforementioned practice pad, a steelworker's helmet, two garbage cans, and a couple of heavy-duty rubber balloons. (In hindsight, I sometimes think that was the coolest sounding drum kit I've come across in the last 50+ years.) A year or so later I got a real [sic] drumkit, which was actually one of those deaprtment store toy kits, but at least it had a kick pedal and something that resembled a hihat cymbal arrangement.
When I was 8 years old I started playing the flute, and quickly became quite* accomplished on that instrument. So in a lot of ways I feel like the flute was really my first musical instrument...only because the drums, even though they came first, were such a half-assed jury-rigged approach... I didn't play on a real drumkit until I was 16 years old, long after I'd abandoned the flute and started playing guitar and bass.
* by "quite" accomplished I simply mean moreso than a typical 8-year-old might become. I was by no stretch of the imagination a Virtuoso, I was simply really good for an 8-year-old.
