I'm new to the Washburn bass community. I bought this beauty yesterday and actually don't know anything about it. It is a Washburn B-30 Force ABT Survivor in purple metallic paint. Maybe someone can tell me more about it?

Hi Rubin------just got it up on our updated database list in post 588 above. Boy that first number in the SN looks like a "6" and I'll put it on the database list as (provisionally) a 1986 "prototype. I explain why further down in this response to you. The "K" in front of it mean Kasuga factory in Japan.
The interesting thing about the ABT B-30 is some DO have what appears to be 1986 SN's when they came out for 1987! Washburn WILL do some confusing things sometimes.

Here is some info I ended up with about his SN issue when I investigated it:

In reading over a review from a June 1987 edition of a British guitar magazine called IM&RW (whatever that means), Washburn sent 3 new ABT bass samples for review: a B-30 (selling for 699 British pounds), a B-10 (selling for 260 pounds) and a B-2 (selling for 195 pounds). Interesting, detailed stuff. The B-30 was made in Japan (Kasuga) and the B-10 and B-2 were made in Korea. OK, of course we also have the B-15, B-20, B-32, B-105.


I have pictures of a B-30 fretless has SN K709001. It is a 1987. Fine. Goody.


psp742 has a B-30 with SN K63624 and I noticed it was referred to in my notes as a 1986.

Only the last number of the year was used as the first number of the serial number IF 6 numbers were used. In 1990, for instance on a 1990 B-105, when 7 numbers were used, THEN it was the first 2 numbers of the serial number were also the last two numbers of the year. Or at least, so it would seem....BUT our own kodiakblair has 3 ABT's and ALL have 7 numbers:


B10 Fretless (7010652) a B20 (8050779) and a B105 (9011393)......so the ABT B-10 would have to be 1987 unless they made them in 1997, right? The B-20 would have to be 1988 unless they made them in 1998, right? And the B-105 seems to comfortably correct as a 1990.

So now I have a headache. Again.

Also I noticed only the B-30 has a letter in front of the serial number.

Here are the 1987 catalog page 8 with good info on the controls. You must remember that Washburn has a history of catalogs and price lists BOTH not listing some of what the other has. And remember, I HAVE the 1987 review of their entrance into the market.

You note the 1987 catalog says "proud to unleash....". So, yours is a 1986 and that SN was mistakenly put on while it was being made for 1987 release. Cool!

Here is a 1987 ad for you and please note they tell you it is a NEW bass for Washburn:
The B-30, along with the others in the catalog all started for sale as 1987 new models. Supposedly you'll never see or find a 1986 B-30. But, yep, we do--at least in Serial Number!

Do not let the serial numbering technique throw you off course. A couple of times here I have listed the 5 different methods Washburn has used over the years, including bouncing between the first or first 2 numbers referring to year. Sometimes BOTH methods used within the same year depending on bass/guitar or model.

Also you cannot assume ANY bass is initially manufactured in the year it first appears. There is lead time in manufacturing and distribution. So the first basses of a model coming out, for instance a 1987 B-30, are ALWAYS physically made before their 1987 debut and the serial number will be for that (1987) coming-out year (whatever method of SN they want to use). They will then continue manufacturing that bass throughout the year and kick in the following year's start-up as well to hit the market at the beginning of the next year. We see examples, however, of some basses being serial numbered with the year it was being made for release the next year. Another Washburn "thing" which can cause no end of argument.
Another example for you is the CB (Classic Bass): the actual announcement of the release of this new "CB" bass series was made January 12, 2007 (for the CB-14,15 and 16). They did not make the initial batch for release IN that January, of course not. They would have had to make them in 2006 to have them ready for 2007 and stamp those 2007 serial numbers on them.

Here is another 1986 B-30 serial number K863424 BTW. But that owner also "knew and said it" was 1988 when he sent me the serial number. ???

BTW You will note if you look at the "listing" of models from current Washburn Website they do not even list a 1988 B-30 at all. But they do list the B-105 although I can find only 1990 samples of it so far.

Again....No official 1986 B-30's in some peoples' minds. And yes, your's is made in Japan by Kasuga.

Interesting little fact just in case...the Force ABT B-30 ad (see attached and also posted above in #2242) is from the May 1987, Guitar Magazine. And remember, a review of this "new" bass came out in June 1987 (U.K.). I say this because you may find this particular ad being advertised for sale as 1986. Usually I find, in collecting these ads, that the date and magazine name (or initials) is on the reverse page of the ad where an article is continuing or perhaps starting. BUT when the reverse side of the ad has another ad on it, there will be no date, magazine name or page number there. Then the vendor is guessing.


This has happened a few times where an ad is incorrectly dated when it is up for sale, so I usually email and ask if the date/magazine name is on the other side or not. If it IS, then I get it. If it is NOT, I keeping looking until I find one that has the date of the issue.

Just a tip for those that also pursue these old ads.

Neck should be painted. Some players don't like painted neck saying it "drags" on their fretting hand...so your neck was probably sanded down perhaps. Thanks for the SN correction. I was thinking 1986 and dumbed it in. Love corrections to keep'er straight!
