What wood essence is this?

Hey there!

Just a quick thread with a question for the eagle eyes of the Talkbass forums!

Could you name that wood with just that single picture?
Thanks and cheers

Is it very light weight? possibly Paulownia? It's pretty hard to tell from such a small piece to look at, but given the extra largish hole in the neck pocket, (common with lower priced, often Asian made bodies) the wood is probably something fairly cheap. Another possibility is Basswood, though it's often fairly bland and featureless.

Given this is Talkbass, I'm sure someone will come along and give a categorical identification it fairly soon.

The slightly tan colouration, ray flecking on the side wall of the pocket at the top, combined with the deep flatsawn grain on the neck pocket floor make me think of asian hardwoods. It's hard to tell such things of course - is there more detail about the instrument that can help narrow it down?

I've used some very similar-looking 'plain' Paulownia, though some of it is streaky like basswood or poplar (see Special Edition Build-Off: RePsycheldelic'd Starcaster )

What on Earth are you talking about, “wood essence”? The smell of your wood, or possibly this:

I’m guessing replacing “essence” with “species” or “type” is what your attempting to convey…
