What would pair well with a EA Wizzy 12

Hey Guys, Looking to purchase a cab that would go well with my EA wizzy 12. Something to make a mini rig with. I am looking to find something with a small footprint but with a "darker" sound, more old school. I have heard about lowdownsound and how his cabs with 8's sound spectacular. Or should I ust buy another wizzy? I have heard that the EA cabs can sound good with another brand if the color is a little less accurate contrasting the EA cab. I would be using this for both UB and EB. Any suggestions would be great. I'm sure Tom Bowlus has a thread somewhere about this. Poor guy doesn't have many cab's though.LOL.

I have 2 different 12" cabs that sound very different.

My Eden 112 w/horn is my small, upright only cab.
It is very clear, flat, and natural. I roll the horn pot to 1 (almost off), when i play upright or EUB.

When I want an old school, more bottom end sound, I add in or us alone my other cabinet. It is an older Genz-Benz with one 12. The speaker is rated @150 watts, 8 ohm,but I power it with my Acoustic Image amp. The amp is rated @ 1000watts into 2 ohms. I'm not sure what the 8 ohm rating is, but I'm sure it's a lot more than 150 watts. The rule holds true-
over powering a speaker is better than underpowering it ---
just don't push the low end.

Too funny! LOL! :p

I would try an M-line Wizzy, or an NM-208. Both of these cabs would pair really well with an original Wizzy, and both go a bit deeper.

Tom.

Hey Tom, How well do you think the NM-208 would compare with the lowdownsound multiple 8 cabs(long throw of course) the NM is getting a little steep in the $ for me.

I have owned several 8" equipped LDS cabs, and I still own two Patterson Audio 2x8's (which are basically LDS cabs). These do sound great, but for A.) stackability, B.) aesthetics, and C.) efficiency compatibilities, I recommended the EA cabs. Don makes good stuff, though.

I have heard that the EA cabs are pretty effecient, making them louder than others.

The newer EA cabs are higher SPL than the very low SPL original VL design, but are not particularly more 'efficient' than most other cabs on the market.

Don at LDS's first love is 8" speaker cabs. While Don uses crossovers designed by Patterson, there is very little similarity in the design goals and voicing of the Patterson cabs versus the 'typical' LDS cab.

Regarding quality, reliability, durability, and tone, I GREATLY prefer most LDS designs to the current EA products, and if you are talking 8" speakers, my feeling is even strong toward the LDS design and execution. IMO... I have not heard the new NM208, and would really want to get a feel for the reliability of that cab (i.e., driver failure) before I'd take the plunge. IMO!

Another wizzy will be the berryz.:hyper:

I was sorry to hear that Low Down Sound went out of business. Ryan and Bob were top notch. I did a clinic there in '03 with Norm Stockton as part of the Detroit Bass Fest and a great time was had by all. Detroit is a riding a tough wave now a days and the music biz is sure to hurt from it. Guys like Les Collie are doing their best to keep the music scene alive and vibrant. My thoughts are with them as well as my willingness to present clinics, workshops, etc at cost.

I am glad that Don is still building cabs and hope that he has continued success in that aspect of his business

All Wizzy 12 cabs are offered in either 4 or 8 ohm

I tried to order two 8 ohm wizzys a number of times and was never successful. The dealers always say that they are only available in 4 ohms but I've read on TB that 8 ohm is an option

I ended up with some epifani gear, but still would like to get my hands on a wizzy stack with a total 4 ohm load at some point.

Any ideas?

For a while they were only available at 4 ohms. We listened to all those who have asked for the 8 ohm version and worked very hard on making it a reality considering both the sound quality and was there sufficient demand to order enough drivers (all of our drivers are proprietary and must be ordered in minimum quantities). Currently 4 ohm Wizzys are being produced at a 2:1 ratio over the 8 ohm versions. 8 ohm versions of the M-line Wizzy will be ready to ship the week of February 16 -20. I would have to check the production schedule for the regular Wizzy.
