Interesting. I'm a Lakland player, but for 50% a Fender Custom Shop 51 P-bass would be tempting.

But I reckon I'd go with my first instinct - a Bassman 100T head and 410 half-stack. Those things sound incredible, but they're just a little bit too expensive. If they could beat the Ampeg V4B on price, I'd be all over it.

If I had to buy a Fender bass for me, I'd buy the most expensive one and sell it without unboxing it, then go get something else. But if it is for any Fender gear, I'd buy my son a nice guitar like a Jag, DuoSonic, Mustang omething along those lines. Or maybe a Tele for me. Love their guitars but I have other preferences in bass.

And I'd do something basic like a 4 string american passive bass and the 5 string equivalent in active. Unless you already have a fender. I have an american p and J so i'd get 5 string versions of both. or a guitar.

I would never just buy a Fender instrument because there was a discount. Fender quality varies too much for me but if I had the opportunity to play a bunch of Fender instruments and choose the one I liked best that would be ideal.
