1987. The first was an Ibanez whose strings were so close, I could not play it. My next one was a Guild Pilot with 19mm spacing. It was a great bass. If I still had it, I would likely still be happy with it.
1996. Alembic Epic 5-string. Bought it mostly because I got a great deal, but quickly found out 5-strings weren't for me. Of course, that didn't stop me from later buying two more 5s, and two 6s..
'95 or so. It was a transparent red 1988 Wal 5-string (my first 5, my second Wal) and it weighed a TON! Eventually sold it and bought a Modulus Quantum 5, and have owned many 5's (and 4's, and a few 6's) since then...
