I think it was in 1988, a Stingray 5. Sold it a few years later to a colleague who had an identical one and wanted a spare. As it turned out, it became his main bass.

2003 - It didn't occur to me until this question was posed that I have been playing fivers for five years. The first one I tried was a Chinese made Millenium BXP. Nice bang for the buck five-string.

FWIW I love fiver so much that I wish I'd switched 10 years earlier. Better late than never, though.

Two months ago, I got my first Sadowsky 5 string bass. I've played sixers for a few years before that but started out on a four string. Now I play the 5 string Sad almost exclusively but I love the feel of a 4 string.

1988. A Modulus Q5, trans red over quilted maple. Nice bass. Made the HUGE mistake of taking it directly to a gig and tried to play some really difficult charts, all cocky-like. Coupla near train wrecks. It was ugly.

Also made the HUGE mistake of trading my 1975 Fender Precision, modified by Kevin Kaufman (fretless, j pickup, badass bridge) towards it. I think the bass was $1200 and I got like $400 for the trade. Who knew?

So did I. The Greenburst LB75F. Still have it, but am seriously condsidering a refin and headstock reshape to bring it visualy out of the 90's and into the new millenium

I got my '99 Modulus Q5 brand new in '99, and I still have it. I have some other 5's as well now, and I haven't gigged with 4's for 7 or 8 years now, although I still have quite a few.

I started playing fives pretty early and never went back. My first was a Tobias purchased in '84. It was sold off to pay for a custom '87 Tobias (which I still have).

I also had a first-year ('87) MM Stingray V fretless, but I happily dumped that overweight, generic-sounding clunker for a '91 neck-through fretless F-Bass. Still have that one too.

Frankly, I'm surprised that anyone still bothers with the anachronistic four-string anymore. Why settle for such an arbitrary limitation in range and playability if you don't have to?

Bought my first in 1992. It was a Carvin LB75 with a weird pointy headstock. It played OK but the preamp was a POS. It actually sounded much better with the preamp removed.
