What year did you get your first 5 string bass ?

I got one back in 2005 when I started getting into Tom Kennedy and Jimmy Johnson. I love those low notes. I would try to transcribe all those Dave Weckl and Alan Holdsworth songs but couldn't do it on a 4 banger. Now 5'ers are all I play other than my little Warwick 4 string Corvette I've got at home. It never leaves the house either.

It was either '88 or '89. They were still pretty unusual at that time, at least in the area where I lived... I have to admit it took me a few years to get comfortable with the low B string, but now I can't imagine playing bass without it.

1991. A D'Agostino passive 5 string with 19mm string spacing that I found in a small music store in Yonkers, NY. Huge difference between my 4 string Jazz bass! It took me about 6 months to relearn my muting technique.

my first five string fretted was a fodera emperor II that was really great , but not for gigging (but great sound anyway and great feel)

then I switched to a music man stingray V and a marcus miller V

i now still have the marcus miller V and traded the musicman for a fender mia reissue 75

Korean made Toby Tobias. Pretty good bass for the price, and the budget I had back then.

December 31st, 1992, a MM SR5. It's been my main bass ever since, but I had to grow into it.

1989. Westone Pantera.

Clublike neck and major neck dive.

After a 2 hour rehearsal, my left hand and wrist would hurt for a couple of days. I thought that I would get used to it, but after a couple of months, I was in constant pain. And the bass didn't sound very good either. So I sold it, and decided that I was a four stringer for life.

About 3 years later, Guitar Center ran a Christmas special on an Ibanez 6 for $699, which was about $500 cheaper than anybody had ever sold a sixer for at the time. I went and played it, and it was almost as easy to play as my four string, and had perfect balance.

I bought it and gigged with it the same week. I have been playing well designed 5 and 6 stringers ever since.

1998, a Jack Read custom. I shortly after got a 55-94, followed by an MTD 535.

2001, it was an Ibanez. It was my first bass too.

1998-99' can't remember exactly but it was a Warwick Thumb Bolt-on that thumped so hard that I never went back to a four...Maybe someday, but definitely after a 6er.....!

I think I got mine '88-'89. Of all things a Peavey TL-5. It was OK, but it wasn't too long until I unloaded it for a Thumb 5er.
