1959. 14. Still gig regularly, when Covid allows !!
1997 … @ age 43. With very little experience on any stringed instrument. A local acoustic duo suggested that I learn how to play bass so I could play with them. I bought a used, made in Korea, Spector bass for $250, took two lessons and about a month later, after spending every night in my basement learning songs of theirs, (that I taped on a cheap cassette tape recorder) I played my first payed gig with them.
Our gigging days are pretty much done but now, 24 years later, we still play together, regularly.

1976. I was 14 and had been playing trumpet since the 5th grade. Already had moved toward the low end with the baritone horn. I feel very fortunate to have had music loving parents and a drummer older brother who guided my parents instrument purchases. While we weren't rich by any means I ended up with a slightly used Fender P-bass and a Sunn Beta-Bass 1x15 combo. I still have both!
1969, I was 12. My brother played keyboards in a band, but was 4 years ahead of me so we never played together. By the time I was proficient he was away at college, then left music to become a business major. So sad, he was a monster player, studied two years at Syracuse Conservatory, could play most anything by ear.
Fourteen growth rings had I. It was the Jazz (copy) Age. Cardboard Replica was the band — decidedly punk (contemporary). It didn't last. I left school too soon.
