Fun post! I play sitting down a lot, but still use a snugged strap to keep the instrument in a relatively fixed position. Standing I let it down an extra inch or so. 95% of the time I use my right thumb for plucking, varying the tone by how much meat of the thumb contacts the string, and by letting my thumbnail be the last contact point a'la classical guitar.

This is the max length on the strap that came with my P Bass. It is higher than usual but I like it!

The rule for guitar players is you start with the guitar at your knees at 14 and hike it 1/2" a year until it chafes your nipples.

I use a Slinger hip strap. I graduated HS in '71 with a 32" waist. I now have ballooned to 33". As long as my hips stay where they are, my bass will remain at the same height.
Didn't know about Slinger hip straps until googling them thanks to your post. Nice!

I had always thought Wojtec was wearing his a bit high until I tried it myself and experienced how much easier dead accurate slapping is that way.

And I used to call one of my good bass buddies, who is a fully committed "low slinger", a poser but he always got the chicks so it really seemed to work for him.
