Whatcha watching?

Hap & Leonard. So far it's taken a whole season to get over Omar Little in the credits. Might be acting. Think it's the directing.

Watched Bubba Ho-tep years ago. Been trying to read some Joe Lansdale on and off ever since. Just don't grab me. But poopie's just made for tv. Walks a fine line around cliche. Slightly understated humour.

Always interesting even if it is formulaic and staged.

If I wasn't married, my barn would be full of that stuff.

I learned later how staged the show actually is, and now it changes how I watch it, but yeah they come across some cool stuff. As I get older, I appreciate some of the stuff they find more.

Any 'reality' show is staged. Every single one of them.

Totally agree.
The real early ones felt more real, but as the genre evolved and grew in popularity they all have that staged feel to them.
Well hey, wouldn't yanno? Here's an Indian motorcycle from 1902 just laying here on a pile of bushes and pallets. I'll give you $2,500 for it, even in this condition.
Sure, sounds like a deal to me.

My favorite example is this one - and it's bass specific. Faker than fake.

For those that follow vintage Fender basses, this one was well known for being for sale in a Florida pawn shop for about a year prior to the episode. I know a guy who tried to buy it and the woman at the shop would not budge any below $7K at the time (it's a glaringly OBVIOUS refin - which the show's "expert" didn't note). Even if the seller/actor on the show had bought it for $7K, why turn around and sell for $2K?

Pics the mentioned guy took in the Florida pawn shop - obviously prior to the 'restoration' on the show.

I DO find the "pretending English is Portuguese" thing a bit weird. I think I would have rather read more subtitles.
These days I no longer pretend English is English. Subtitles have been known to fill out my understanding of some dialogue.

But some people would rather not watch a show they have to read to understand. Best caption moment ever for me was the Hunt for Red October, where they faded the subtitles out and turned up the English translation early in the piece. Hilarious.

I saw just the other day on Pawn Stars when the guy brought in the John Entwistle Danelectro bass. While Rick's expert verified it as legit, the guy who owned it wanted $50,000 for it.
They told him no go on the 50K.

If I'm selling a vintage bass, especially one owned by a rock icon, the first thing I think is yeah, a pawn shop would be good.
