Finally gave the original Mobile Suit Gundam a chance. Just over halfway through now and tbh it’s holding up so much better than I expected. It’s camp as hell and has some tone problems, but the bewildering elements make it all that more alluring as a time capsule, and the oldschool mecha designs I used to take for granted really earn their prestige here.

It’s almost silly to say in hindsight but, yeah, this deserves its status as a classic and then some.

I watched the 2014 Sci fi release of Lucy, it was okay. The ending was okay, kind of reminded me of a Kubrick 2001 Space Odyssey as Lucy went back in time in her now expanded 100% utilize cerebral cortex. I wouldn't call it great film but it was okay I guess.

I'm kind of intrigued to re-watch Robot Jox, the cheap-ass live-action riff on this idea.

I remember it being pretty cheesy, and disappointing, but also a lot of stupid fun (see also Arena).

I also haven't seen Pacific Rim since it came out, which sort of mashed up Gundam, Robot Jox, and Godzilla (with a quite funny, implied subplot about daddy issues - due to the technical necessity of the two pilots having to electronically link their minds and memories, in order to coordinate the gigantic suit - complicated by one crew being father and son).

Found a documentary last night called The Original Charvel Gang. Had some good info in it about Charvel/Jackson, but I got to tell you, it was one of the most poorly made documentaries I have ever seen. Remember that documentary that Amber Waves put together about Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights? While the subject matter was far different, the quality and aesthetic were similar.

Jumped back on the wife's Apple TV to catch up on Silo. Agree with some of the other posts (not knowing the book storylines at all) that there is way too much draaaaaaaaaamah to fill all those hour timeslots. Get a move on, ffs.

Found Invasion there and have binged a good bit of it. I'm pretty close to the end of season 2. It's the same.. really cool story with interesting aliens but, damn, I find myself with my nose in my phone after listening to endless, inane dialog about pretty much nothing. At least try to serve the story, not every scene needs a soliloquy waxing poetic.

Seems like some cools shows there, I'll keep looking.

I watched Robot Jox again not too long ago (having not seen it, like, 20 years). I was surprised how tight it was. Pretty good for a B-movie, and still as quotable as ever.

I've not seen Silo, but based on all the complaints I've heard about it's pacing etc, I feel inclined to suggest that if you want an exciting / funny / engaging / entertaining version of a similar scenario, head over to Prime, and watch "Fallout".

I remember a version, implying it was an adaptation of "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", back in the mid-00's, staring William Fichtner and Kari Matchett, but it got cancelled after one season - which was a pitty, as it had some really compelling ideas, and some really striking imagery (but it also got horribly bogged down in some first season of "24" level wheelspins, and dead ends).
