Whatcha watching?

I finished up BOOTS on Netflix last night. I was entertained. I have to say as a former squid who booted in 1998, yes, I went to Navy boot camp about 8 years after this Marine boot camp setting so the time and actual service was different. Still, there is NO WAY there was that much drama in a single boot camp division.

After a little research, it was less 'based on' and more 'inspired by' The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White.

I dug tf out of it. Thumbs up.

I've been rewatching The Deuce, season one.
The show is cool, and I totally dig the opening theme song. They switched to a new song in season two and again for season three.
I get it why the song changed, but I liked the first one better than what they came up with instead.

I hope it's better than Friendship, the movie he starred in this year. Watched it a couple nights ago and it was bad.
I almost watched that the other day. Will skip it. Thank you.

Only one episode so hard to tell how it'll turn out because Tim seems better in short form, but it's definitely more weird and funny than it is dumb. I will say it has plenty of potential.

If Hollywood thinks there aren't any original stories out there that could still make money, they're not trying hard enough.
Aren't there supposed to be like seven possible stories you can tell? Leaving aside that you can tell more than one of them in a single narrative, I think I could squash most of my entertainment experience into that straightjacket.

Hollywood, IMHO, got minimal interest in exciting new plotlines. Not when the old ones are the perfect rack to hang big bucks nostalgia on. Been like that since god invented old people.

Last week I finally checked off these two. Both are regarded as better than general expectations, and I agree.

Two of my favorites. I LOVE Fury Road and rank it up there pretty close to Road Warrior. So stylistic, fantastic action scenes and Charlize. She can rub my back with that metal arm.

Edge is great, too. I avoid Cruise films but this one is too good. What a great plot and well directed to deliver a real fun ride. Emily can scratch my back with that sword, she's amazing.

Seein' as this is the month of All Hallows Eve, been going thru some free streaming channels checking older horror films. Many were just OK. Some were fun corny, some were stupid corny.

Two stood out. The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). Haven't seen it in decades and, seen thru these older eyes, really enjoyed it. Narrated by the main shrinking character as he comes to grips with his problem. Thoughtful dialogue, special effects were as expected from '57, though a surprising amount were quite good. And that was the year I was born LOL.

The second was one I'd never seen. The Innocents (1961). A governess, two children in her care, the huge manor may be haunted. I assumed it'd be the same old story, but it just wasn't. Gothic horror, creepy, psychological, no nudity or gore, a sexual undertone (maybe a bit disturbing for some folk), rather ambiguous ending (IMO) and didn't have one jump scare in it (jump scares...overused crap, IMO). Really good cinematography added to the mood. All in all, kind of stuck with me after watching.

And the search continues...

We've been watching The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, and we love it. For one thing, the main character's signature ride is a 1960s Lincoln convertible much like my grandfather's, which I would own if we had the space. Some of the characters are interesting, it has some great plot twists, and it's generally entertaining.

Plus, for a legal drama, some of the legal stuff is surprisingly realistic. The characters actually explore some of the rules governing attorney conduct, many of the courtroom scenes ring true, much of the law is accurate, etc. Clearly, lawyers were involved in the writing process.

Some of it is wildly unrealistic, but most of the legal content is closer to reality than any TV legal drama I've seen except The Practice, which ran in the late 1990s. I taught a legal ethics class in 1999 and told my students to watch it for class discussion, because every episode involved difficult issues encountered by real lawyers every day.

I never tire of watching 'The Incredible Shrinking Man'. Nice review there too. I agree.
I haven't seen the other one, but I sure do enjoy those old films from the 50's and 60's. Seems like shortly after that movies started the shift to less plot and more special effects, graphic violence, and gore to scare people.
Although that Silver Shamrock stuff in Halloween scares the crap out of me.

Not to be a wet blanket but shag me can anyone act in Invasion? I swear the writing and acting has gotten worse. Never seen this happen. It needs to end or I'll keep watching it.

Otherwise Paramount putting in work with Tulsa King and South Park and soon s04 of Mayor of Kingstown, so TV life ain't bad.

I've also heard Crashing is good. Gonna start watching that with a friend.

Every now and again I like pure trash garbage. I haven't seen much of the series but "My Strange Addiction s06ep01 - Eats Bricks/Married To A Carnival Ride" is both the best title for anything ever and somehow undersells the crazy. Rare ground.

Did she name the carnival ride? Does she wear a ring? Has there been any cheating in the relationship? How much does it cost to marry a roller coaster? Can an adult human being answer all of these questions with a straight face? Yes. Definitely yes.

Found another good (IMO) old movie yesterday, Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964). Not horror, but psychological dealing with madness concerning a domineering, manipulative unbalanced woman who works at home as a medium and her docile husband. Acting was excellent along with intelligent dialogue. Atmosphere and set decorations added to the story.

@roccobass, after reading your post, I found The Monolith Monsters (1957) on Tubi. Perfect Saturday afternoon viewing, just like when I was a kid when Saturday cartoons were over LOL. A little girl on a field trip just took an alien rock. What could possibly go wrong? LOL
