Whatcha watching?

All the streamers dropping their October goodies!

The Beast Within '82 release (not that crappy new one about the dad werewolf). Been waiting for this one for awhile, it is top camp. Pretty terrible but redeemed with it's stellar allstar B-movie casting. Ronny Cox, RG Armstrong, Luke Askew , et al, are all great in this. It came out when I was 16 or 17 and I remember the monster transformation being touted as unparalled or something like that. Considering the special (d)effect technology of the time, I think it's effin great.

Something newer... Bring Her Back, streaming on Max. Made by the guys who made the movie about kids holding a possessed hand and becoming, well, possessed (which was a good one). This movie is disturbing. I'm old now and pretty squeamish. So, there were lot's of looking away at my phone or something during this one. In the end, I loved it. Effin scary and disturbing (I said that, I think) and just a great horror flick.

Started newest Monster on Netflix about Ed Gein. I'm a few episodes in and just blown away by the influence this guy had on film - Psycho/Texas Chainsaw. Those flicks being incorporated into the narrative of the series is pretty interesting. Enjoying this one so far.

"Wonka" (2023)

I had completely forgotten this movie existed until I happened upon while scrolling the guide. I had zero interest in it when it was released, but I had nothing else to do so I gave it a shot.

It's very different than both "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971), which I love, and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), which I don't like. The way "Wonka" was reimagined was a big gamble, but I like it a lot. In fact, I find it quite charming. I watched about an hour of it, and I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing.

Agreed. There are classics that should be left alone, and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is one of them. Most of the money-grab movies that have come out in the last few decades are lame. If Hollywood thinks there aren't any original stories out there that could still make money, they're not trying hard enough.

The original was a beautiful, weird and special thing because of Gene Wilder. The story isn't unique or interesting. Gene Wilder was the movie. Him and the cast of wacky characters and the tone, but mostly him. It didn't need to be remade with Johnny Depp and definitely didn't need ol' Timmy Charlamagne taking a shot at it.

I fully expected to hate "Wonka," but I don't. I'm glad they didn't try to essentially redo "Willy Wonka..." - this movie is its own thing, with its own brand of whimsy.

Tron Ares is garbage. The acting is terrible and the characters are bland and boring and the script is awful. I love the original Tron and I love Tron Legacy and the cartoon is pretty great and this movie is a piece of ****. Jared Leto played Morbius but in Tron but not a vampire and just as bad. There was a female lead character who may not actually have been an actor. Maybe she was a friend of the director or she tricked somebody into being there. Jeff Bridges put on the costume they mailed him and then filmed himself on his iphone in his living room for his three minute scene. It’s a terrible movie. Really bad.
