On the way: Planet Waves Tuner

Still looking for a home: Digitech EX-7 and Hyper Phase

The PW Tuner will replace the Ibanez LU-20 on my main board, and I'm going to assemble a smaller "Just for church" board with the LU-20, Korg Ampworks, Dano FAB Chorus and Chili Dog octave. It'll just be the basics for my church, since (for whatever reason) the Korg sounds better run through my church's PA than my VT Bass, plus I don't really need the synth, delay or gnarly distortion from my main board.

Contemplating busting up my stereo concert rig. Eden Navigator PreAmp (bought from Chris Chaney) and pristine Crown MacroTech 2402. Probably holding on to matching EAVL210's with road cases. Looking at getting an EA iAmp Pro and a Wizzy 12 for modular lightweight expandability. My aching back.....

Coming: Line 6 X2 wireless, Xotic Robotalk 2 and another Boss PS-3.

Going: The first round of pedals I'm putting up for sale - probably tomorrow night. Probably Chunky Cheese, Heliotrope, Rust Ride and VT Bass.

After the Pitchfactor I realized I wouldn't use most of it's functions, but the ones I would (detune chorus, "whammy", crystals) could be done well enough for me by the PS-3. Plus since the Akai can only do looping OR delay and not both, the Boss allows me to make delayed loops.

As for the Xotic I really like the 00Funk but it can be a bit quacky for synthy combos and decays too fast to be used with tremolo (something I like to do) so I'm going to take it for a spin. We'll see if I keep it, the Chunk or both.

Coming: Eventide PitchFactor, Loop-Master A/B/Y box

On the chopping block: Analogman Bi-Chorus, Nano Stone, Maxon FL-301, Demeter Compulator, Strobostomp 2

Gone: Nano Bassballs, Prometheus, Carbon Copy, Brown Dog.

Maybe in sometime (when I get the money/the right trade comes along): Octavius Squeezer.

presenting: the REAL bass big muff:

nabbed for $50 on Craigslist.

Believe the hype.

:hyper:

going: There isn't room for 3 muffs in the house - either the LBM or BBM has to go!

Wrong-o. It's a green Sovtek, which ain't no BBM. The BBM is based on the current black Russian, according to an email I received from Electro-Harmonix on the subject.

Noooo....he's right. The BBM is based on the green Sovtek muff. It says so right in the manual- heck, they even tried to make it about the same color. Why would they bass the BBM on the still-in-production Russian Big Muff Pi that doesn't work nearly as well with bass? Maybe there was a typo in your email.

I emailed EHX with this very question right before the pedal was released. Here is the response:

"The Bass Big Muff is based on a really good sounding current production Russian Big Muff (we don't have any of the green ones unfortunately) with some changes to the Tone knob to make it sound better with bass. And then we added a switch to give a bass boost or mix in your dry signal or no change at all."

Here is the quote from the website's instructions (which is a great idea, by the way; I hate having to download a PDF every time I want to read the instructions):

"The Bass Big Muff draws its roots from the legendary Sovtek battle-tank green Big Muff Pi, from the late 90’s as well as from the original Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi from the early 70’s."

Logically, both are correct, as the black Russian pedals are based on both the green Sovtek and the original 70s Big Muff (as are every other Big Muff in existence). But, my email reply was very specific, and the manual's description is fairly vague. Since I happen to know that the only differences (circuit-wise; the construction is far superior with each successive generation) between the green Sovtek and the black Russian are in three resistor values, it only stands to reason that if those three resistors are found in the same location in the circuit of the BBM, then that is correct. Until I know that for certain, I stand by my statement that the Bass Big Muff is directly descended from the current production black Russian Big Muff, and not the old green Sovtek.

And also from EHX:
"The Bass Big Muff draws its roots from the legendary Sovtek battle-tank green Big Muff Pi, from the late 90’s as well as from the original Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi from the early 70’s. These Big Muff Pi’s are often employed by bass players to thicken up their sound or to give them over-the-top low end growl. The Bass Big Muff takes the best elements from both of these classics and employs sonic elements that were specifically designed for your bass."

From your email, it sounds like they meant they're using parts from the current Russian muff and trying to get it to sound like the green Russian (Sovtek) muff. Bass players are known for using the old green Sovtek, not the new black one; if the new black one sounded better for bass than the old green one, then they wouldn't have made the new BBM that's based on the green Sovtek.

Except that the BBM has other features not found on any other Big Muff in production (at the time) that affect the circuit. Now, I'm not entirely sure how much of it is true, and how much of it is sales hype (I tend to lean towards sales hype, although EHX is usually pretty honest with me), so the solution - the proper, more progressive solution - is to dispense with it all, and buy a Boss Metal Zone.

But, in an effort to keep myself from being lynched, I say we move on. I just got some news on my Black Gold Wah that I'm not sure I want to keep. It'll be here soon. I think it's sad that I'm more interested in writing the review than actually using the pedal. Why they won't make the REALLY long-throw pedals anymore, I do not know. They say it has to do with damaging the crucial ligaments in your leg and foot, but that's sort of far-fetched. If that were true, then you couldn't use the clutch, brake or the gas pedal on a car without the same problems, and they're not going away any time soon.
