What's going to replace the Precision?

these have been around for around 400 years without a lot of changes. I guess the P bass still has wheels for a bit longer.

I know some of us refuse to believe it, but I think the Precision is just another fad that's bound to fade someday. It was always there, but it wasn't always there: How many basses did Sting go through before landing on his Precision? Where were they in the 80s, the 90s and the early 00s?

With that in mind, what do you think is going to replace the Precision?

** I mean on its way out in the sense that Sean Hurley says it’s a P bass world out there. Not on its way out completely.**
Presume you actually meant to ask when the Precision would be up staged by another instrument as used by pop music bassists. The Jazz Bass somewhat did so in the period you referenced, though not in the studios.

But, to answer your question, I would say it’s anyone’s guess. Pop music has lost its Top 40 center. I think these days it is really difficult to gauge instrument popularity at all; in as much as it is difficult to gauge what constitutes popular music? Top 40? Who knows?

A.I. will soon be telling us what bass parts we are to like. In the name of Talkbass, I welcome our new Overlords!
Makes me wonder if all the Conestoga Wagon builders of the late 1800s saw an automobile for the first time and wrote "Its just a fad, nothing will replace the Conestoga" on the TalkWagon chalkboard

When I was apprenticed to a buggy whip maker in my youth, I thought there would be no future in whips. Then I search the internet for whips and oh boy was there a thriving market for them! Chains too!

I got my first Precision back in 2009, which admittedly feels like an eternity ago. Nothing flashy; it's one of the "Classic Series" MIM 50s Precisions. If anyone is familiar with the current Vintera II model with the lighter finish, this one is basically identical. Didn't have it in my possession for several years due to a move across the country, but I finally got it back a couple months ago and it's been a blast.

Lately, I've pretty much been alternating between that old Precision (with flats) and my newer Sire P8 (rounds). The Sire can obviously be a lot more versatile, but the majority of the time, I just use it in passive mode with only the split-coil pickup. I don't know if it's just the way I play or what, but that tone generally feels more "right" to me than anything I do with the blend, active preamp, etc...

So, what's going to replace the Precision? Probably nothing, at least for the players that really enjoy them. Sadly though, none of this stops me from wanting more new basses.
