What's in your Gig Bag...?

Here is a packing tip for anyone with small flashlights or other clyndrical prisms type objects.

Wrap your duct tape, and/or electrical tape around said item as much as you feel necessary, that way you don't have to carry as many seperate items.

note, this is what I do when backpacking(not gigging), with my duct tape around my nalgene, it is very useful there, I'm sure it would be useful for gig bag packing too.

extra set of strings
screwdrivers
cable
earplugs (though I usually carry them in my backpack anywhere I go, anyway)

oh, gotta get extra batteries now that I've got an active bass.

I'm currently trying to squeeze down my Zoom 506-II with its adaptor into the nifty hardcase that I got with my Cirrus. I'm not sure it's a good idea though..

Mostly the same bassplayer stuff that is common above, plus:

-Sharpie and paper for writing setlists
-Flashlight
-Spare JBL 2416 compression driver diaphragm (for monitor horns)
-Mixing console manual
-Electrical tape
-Pee Chee folder (remember those from 20 yrs ago?) containing: notes for live sound, note frequencies (great for taming boom in a room), common freq’s that “tune up” drums, bass, guitar, vox, etc., keyboard notes
-Cd’s for PA lightoff and break music
-Spare mic clip
-Spare SM57
-ConducTool (cleans ¼” m & f connections)
-Rack screws
-Zip ties
-Tweeter bulb for Goliath horn
-empty 9v packages (oops)
-Ibuprofen
-Misc. dustbunnies &grime. Oh, and a good coating of bar smooge on everything listed above (that smoke/beer stench that perfumes everything so nicely for you)

Essentially, just enough stuff that it hangs out the top and I will never be able to properly close the bag. Ever.

Some pretty decent stuff here... i would like to suggest to anyone who uses duct tape to consider purchasing Gaffer's Tape instead. It is just as strong but doesn't leave the sticky mess that duct tape does. It is a little more expensive BUT it is the industry standard when it comes to taping down loose cables.

in my gig bag is my bass... nothing more, nothing less!

however, i also carry a ruck sack with the following

3m two plug extension cable
two guitar-to-amp leads
two speakon to speakon connectors (from my amp to cab)
two power leads amp + spare
spare strings (never needed them to-date)
spare 9V
various alan keys
philips screw driver
strap
my amp has a spare fuse in the power socket
boss tuner & power adaptor
note pad and pen/pencil (ALWAYS!)
every now and then i carry a mic cable - in case i want to use it for some reason or other.. you know how it is?!
when i went on tour i took a soldering iron and solder too :)

I dont carry an books with me- if someone needs me to play a certain scale or outline a certain chord they can describe it to me thus "phrygian with #6" or whatever!?
I dont carry a spare strap cause i use leather ones and i've never broken one in 13 years!

I dont carry any mics, or spares for my amp - if the amp goes, it's through the PA, no bass or gig over!

2 20+foot Gold tip cable
1 5' cable
2 10' cable
Leatherman Tool
band-aids (for cuts)
picks
9 volt battery
tuner - Boss
Power Strip with 12 foot cable (one of them industruial mothers)
Sharpie
duct tape
book of cheat sheets
Small Flashlight
Pic's of my kids
Spare Change (phone)

This is really super-nerdy but...let's learn something!

What do you have in your gig bag? Do you have a checklist? how do you get ready gear wise?

I have a few things:

My cell phone
my wireless
extra strings (sometimes when I can afford it)
Polish, and fingerboard conditioner, and fret ease
strap
a few good cords, and a coupla mediocre backups
my bass, obviously
sansamp bassdriver DI
good speaker cable
2 or more 9 volt batteries
AC adapter or 2
Tuner, seiko


Oh, and a power strip!

I think that's about it.

I've started carrying one of these Royce cable checkers. It's got plugs and jacks for every audio cable known to man and it checks continuity, ground and proper wiring order between ends.

Invaluable!!

For you blister prone guys, try keeping a bottle of superglue (in a plastic bag) in your gigbag. You can cover sore spots to keep a blister from forming or glue the skin back on a blister that has burst.

You can also glue your guitarists picks to his mikestand for some extra fun! :rollno:
