What's On Your Workbench?

Just started the finishing on a few necks. One is for Anthony Corley I am building a custom 5 string lefty for him and my supplier in Ohio got me some outstanding maple I have to call him tomorrow and get some more of it. It's getting harder and harder to get and getting so expensive.

Anyway i am finishing Anthony's neck with Crimson Guitars finishing oil from Ben Crow in the UK. It's supposed to be reversed engineered Tru-Oil that is thinner and and dries faster but can still build up the finish as well. Went on great I just applied first coat heavy and wiped it down. Next coat I will apply with 1200 wet/dry paper and sand it in then wipe again and repeat a few times. It stinks more than Tru-Oil and is much thinner we shall see how it does..

Man that is beautiful work, love it. Got any pictures of the rough glue up? Curious to see what that looked like before you got to this. Impressive!

Sure.

It began like this, with all the layers ready to be glued:

(Wenge, maple veneer, purpleheart stringer, maple veneer, wenge stringer, maple veneer, bloodwood core, maple veneer, wenge stringer, maple veneer, purpleheart stringer, maple veneer, wenge.)

Then I glued them together and planed them flat:

Then I cut off a section of the neck blank and glued an ebony/maple-veneer lamination to it:

Scarfed the neck:

And the headstock:

Did some pre-cutting on the headstock to make it a bit easier on me later:

And set them in my scarf-gluing jig:

Then glued them together:

Then I needed to glue some ears on:

(I took a lot of care to grain-match the ears, to the point that I can no longer find the glue joint.)

Then I used another jig to remove some waste wood from the back of the headstock:

Then I cut the neck out, trued the lines up to the design, and started shaping:

It came out nice in the end:

Thanks everyone. Your compliments mean a lot to me.

Also I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a bit part of the reason that the wood and grain on that guitar pops is that instead of doing an extensive amount of fine-grit finish sanding with progressively higher grits, I instead sanded to 220 and then used scrapers to get a smooth, slick surface.

I did this primarily because scraping gives a nicer surface finish, but also because it's faster and I really hate sanding.

I made a little tote to benefit United Way via a silent auction at work.

The tote is basically a gift basket with the theme of Ronald Ulysses Swanson.

So it will have some cigars, a nice bottle of tequila (Hornitos black), some soapstone shot glasses, and a gift card to a local meat market. I'll dress it up with some multicolored plane shavings.

Nicely done. should put some single malt whiskey in there instead. Lagavulin preferably . :)
