I am giving a few bowls I turned for presents. I need to step up my game for next year, but not bad output considering I just started turning stuff in September. My dad has made tree ornaments in the past, I should do that next year.

Nice. I keep watching wood turning videos on YouTube and thinking I need to try something besides knobs. One of these days!

When I was a teen my family would drive west in the station-wagon pulling a rented pop-up camper for summer vacation, and along the way the road signs would inevitably read "Walnut Bowls" (10 miles or whatever) Every time I see a hand-turned bowl (walnut or not), it comes to mind. We never stopped where they were, so I never actually saw them.

What are the holes in the saddles for? Are there other pieces that go there? Or height adjust screws?

Making preparations for a couple of winter projects. Not sure if I'll create threads for these or not seeing as they aren't ideal subject matter for TB.

First will be my take on a Strat-shaped object. Cherry body, curly maple neck and Madagascar Rosewood board, and a 2 point trem.

Second project will roughly be a Les Paul Special double cut... but with some twists. Mahogany body and neck, Braz board and redwood lace burl top; probably gonna be crowns and binding involved. Should be interesting.

Picked up this Vox VR212 speaker cabinet cheap. The speaker baffle was cut open for some reason. I'll remove the baffle and replace and then recover it. My only dilemma now is whether to put it back to 2x12 or 1x15?

Yes, there will be height adjustable saddles.

Do you have any choice? To judge by threads here in TB, seems like the box dimensions are critical to match the drivers, but some say “close enough is good enough”. I have a Peavey Black Widow 15 is like to re-house, finding it hard to find good info on Thiele parameters or other exact info on it.

Actually I do. The cabinets are identical except for the speaker baffle itself. I have both already and just picked this one up for $25. Since the baffle has been cut (originally for two 12") and I have to replace I could put a baffle for the single 15". I am leaning to putting it back to twin twelve though as that is what the plate on it indicates. I can always build another complete cabinet if I want. I seen the many discussions and running both these amps the guitar works fantastic with the 2x12 and the bass is deep and full with the 1x15 so I guess Vox got something right.

I built this twin 15" using the Vox cabinet as a basis. Worked perfectly and gives great low end and powerful projection. It has a pair of Warehouse Guitar speakers in it I bought many moons ago. Loud with the little Traynor parked on top. Better response then my Vox cabinet but that is probably due to the speakers. Musicman used the same style Cabinet for some of their speakers.

I did 2 setups on a new customers left handed basses. He was so happy that with the work that he then gave me his other 4 basses to work on.

Here are the 2 most interesting:

First one is a Kip Sophus fretless short scale. Great wood combos, EMG pickups and Bartolini Pre.

The fretboard was delaminating. Thankfully it closed up pretty well when dry clamping so I opted to not yank the whole board and just inject some glue and clamp it up. We’ll see how it looks tomorrow.

In case you were wondering, the stewmac body board and vise is totally worth it. I plan on getting a second set soon.

This other one is kinda cool too. The customer had it made for him by a builder in Puerto Rico. He’s had issues with no sound since he brought it home.

There were a few other techs who had their hands on it since as the customer told me, but he still wasn’t happy with it and there was still no sound. The bass is not built terribly well but he just wanted it to be playable.

Anyway, got the electronics out which took some work. The last tech claimed he’d have to take the top off and reglue it back together with a refin and quoted him $3k! That’s a “I don’t want this job” price if I ever heard one.

A $6 10” hemostat from amazon and 2 days later I had the wires disconnected from the preamp and everything pulled.

the 1/8” plug that goes From the under saddle pickup to the preamp was inserted but the wires that connect everywhere disconnected under the heat shrink. Soldered it back and it was good to go!

There’s no truss rod in the (absurdly) HUGE neck but thankfully it was straight. The frets were all over the place though so I leveled them, ditched the shims that were under the bridge saddle and were good to go!

The bass sounds good unplugged and plugged. Plays nice too. Huge squarish neck, tiny frets, no fretboard radius, low action.
