What's On Your Workbench?

Got an interesting project at work last week. This 8/4 cypress came from the Wild Turkey distillery and was part of a giant mash tank built like a huge barrel. You can tell which side was facing into the vat.

Perfect for a naturally distressed entry door.

Even better, I got just enough drops to glue together a blank and make myself a P-bass to string up with flatwounds.

An idea for a vacuuming work surface- The darker little recessed area at the edge of the work surface drops down, and is actively sucking dust away from the work surface, presumably by a fan, vacuum, or magic.

I'd like to have SOME kind of suction on the surface itself, and that's why I'm here: Any one have a brilliant idea for the shape of hole, or holey material to use? I figure a few lines or even a bunch of dots would do the trick, but I'd love to optimize the balance of usefulness vs the not-losing-tiny-items-ness

Pluggable holes like in a downdraft table provides a great balance of open area and distribution for maintaining high suction with wide coverage.

I also had the thought that it would be cool if someone offered parts for one to make their own knobs in the same way. I thought of a really simple way that would allow people to mix and match a bunch of parts to make their own unique knobs, but my machine is not quite good enough to allow for that without some error...Still, it would be really cool and would allow a whole new world of customized knobs.

When searching for MM covers I found plastic bobbins as well. Tomorrow morning I’m going to wind the coils.

I finished the preamp, only problem is that it does not work. Tomorrow I’m trying to find sound out of it.

EDIT: I guess 220ohm resistor instead of 2.2Mohm resistor makes quite a difference. I'll have to swap those two resistors tomorrow.

Love this!!! I also realize that I've got one of those PCBs lying around .... somewhere.

I've been trying really hard to stop and smell the roses with regards to my builds. I think I am finally getting on the slow, relaxed train with this one. Combine that with so many things I've never done before (that Floyd Rose Trem route - whew!), and this is the longest a build has ever taken me (in a good way). I am still wishing I had more time in the shop though, work has not subsided at all during this quarantine, if anything it's busier than ever, which I'm thankful for.

Anyway guitar

and I'm still turning bowls like a madman and I feel like I'm starting to get better at it.

That body shape tho!
Can we see some more pics of that?

Oh, your bowls also amaze me. I'd literally take a stack of those for my pantry. I love stuff like that!

This is a week old picture of the body, I've done a lot of shaping since then. It's a tribute to Jerry Garcia's "Tiger" guitar, but I mixed Jerry's original guitar with one made by Alembic. I actually didn't know I was working off the Alembic model until I was well into the build :-D. As we all know, minor changes to the body can make a big difference in how the guitar looks, I can see the areas where I've done some minor nipping and tucking looking at this pic.

Thanks on the bowl comment too - it's really fun to take a hunk of wood and end up with a bowl, and it only takes a couple hours. I have so much to learn with turning though, I feel like I just cleared the initial learning curve. I can see some significant improvement from some of my older bowls I have.

It's funny, I tend to gravitate towards the odd stuff. I like the ones that stack a little goofy, have odd shapes, stuff like that. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I recently got this set of dishes and I just love them (stock internet photos) -

This restaurant I recently designed uses a similar oddly shaped place setting, and they display it when not being used -

All that to say that, in my opinion, the slightly off ones are more interesting anyways.

I have turned a few bowls out of "almost dry" wood, as they dried they ovalized, those are cool, but it would be hard to get them ovalized the same way every time and not have them crack. I've had some of that too, cracks that show up or grow after I get done turning. The hardest thing is getting the finish smooth, I've found a couple of short cuts that are making it better.
