What's so special about Larry Graham?

Geez, this again. Until Larry came along, if you picked up a bass in a music store and did what he did, you'd be forcibly removed from the store for abusing instruments. Now, you go into GC, and you can't not hear people slappin' away. It also seems every damn pedal demo devolves into slap at one point or another - but I digress.

Our instrument is about 60 years old, which is very young in contrast to things like violins. We have the opportunity to have the pioneers on our instrument alive in our lifetime - we should be very happy to live in this era.

He expanded out palette greatly. Although I don't slap very well or often, my technique does have a lot of fret grind at times - probably more of an Entwistle thing in my case. Still, every guy that decided that you didn't have to play the same way that everyone else did (and showed us how) has paved the way for all of us.

Ok, ok... I'll show myself out...

Funny how people even mention Rick James. I think, in the grand scheme of Funk Royalty, he's maybe a court jester. Doesn't hold a candle to Graham, who practically invented it, and even Bootsy.
Did Rick James actually play bass? I've only ever seen him holding one. He's always had a bassist in his band.

Not sure what to tell you.
He came up with an entirely new way to play the instrument, invented a frontman role to go with it, has the classiest looks, sings at Motown level while playing mean lines, used all kinds of effects before anyone did, wrote lines to a dozen major hits.
Any video of his clearly shows he's a master. One who thinks Jamerson is overrated could easily miss it though.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And, yes, he looks like a million bucks every single performance. Not on my coolest day ever could I even get in the ballpark of Larry Graham cool. He just oozes cool.

Sure you're not. Just taking another post and almost word for word duplicating it, just changing the genre and the names. That's never a troll.

I'll pass.

But he said he wasn't a troll!!!

I can't believe I even clicked on this thread.

Larry Graham is a national treasure. Period.
