Aww....don't let the tomato throwers bother you Diego. You have just as much right as anyone else to post an opinion on TB, regardless of what that opinion may be. That's what makes TB such a great forum. :thumbsup:

I would much rather live in a world of differing opinions than live in a world where everyone had the same opinion of everything. It's the *diversity* on this planet that makes life worth living! :)

Literally "missing" everything!

Take it out of context for a sec. Is Tony Hawk the BEST skateboarder today? Probably not. But Not one skater ever living has done more to push the envelope. Is Starbucks the BEST coffee ever brewed? Maybe not but you can get coffee that you like because Starbucks made it possible. Is Miles Davis the BEST trumpeter? Heck, he couldn't (or wouldn't, you decide) even play the same bar the same way twice in a row.
Is Larry Graham the BEST? It's subjective for sure. But if you slap or pop even once in a while it is because of Larry Graham.

If you don't get it, you don't get it.

Did anybody link the video of him talking about inventing slap style because his mama was too cheap to hire a drummer? Look it up.

You don't have to like slap to appreciate how he revolutionized playing the bass guitar for soul/R&B/funk, and how those styles worked their way into mainstream pop, rock, and even country.

But I don't understand why Larry Graham is so highly regarded here on TalkBass and in the media. I listened to Sly and The Family Stone and Graham Central Station top songs on Spotify and watched a few videos on YouTube. Sure, he has that sort of thumping technique and a few fills on "Thank You," but is that it? I guess he did come before Rick James et al., making him a pioneer?

I'm being serious here. I'm not trolling. What am I missing?

There's a few of these threads floating around here so I'm gonna double down... Here are some other worthy topics all of use should consider;
What's the deal with Jaco? Who would anyone want to play fretless?
Why do people like James Jamerson? I mean he only played with one finger. No skill.
I'm a Christian (:eek:no I'm not:rage:), but what's the deal with that Jesus guy though? Said he was a carpenter, but couldn't pull a nail to save his life. Couldn't swim. I just don't get it.
People are entitled to their wrong opinion.
Doesn't make it a right opinion when they get upset to find out they're not in the majority.
But it does make you wonder what universe other people are living in sometimes.
In my universe I am hollywood handsome, however, the real universe has mirrors.

He invented electric bass slapping. And he invented it out of necessity............the drummer didn't show up for a gig and Larry did percussive bass playing to cover for the drummer.
