What's the deal with Cab size combinations?

1x18 is ideal. It rolls off every thing you don't want and kicks ass with what you do. 1x15 is OK, but 10" speakers don't reproduce bass frequecies at all...... :hiding::ninja::hiding::ninja::confused:

Extreme measures given as pure good natured joshing as there's numerous stickies and threads posted by the dozen every week on the subject of mixing driver sizes. No harm or insults intended.

Plus I've been waiting for an opportunity to post those two images for awhile, it's been a day here.....:help:
 
the frightening thing to me is that EV actually published DIY plans for these things. IIRC it was a big old sealed box. And I think they may have actually marketed a home version of this thing called the "Emperor" or something like that back in maybe the 60s/early 70s :hmm:
Trouble is that the EV 30 was a total utter failure, the 'bridge too far' of the loudspeaker industry. It simply didn't work. :crying:
 
Compressed foam? But foam is expanded plastic, so if you compress it isn't it........ Wut?
The 'compressed foam' in question resembled the foam used in disposable coffee cups. They used it because the mass of a traditional cone was so high that the driver motor couldn't power it.

Literally... if you take it outside the box it works just fine.
As a birdbath, for instance... or a planter. Perhaps a wheel chock for your pickup truck....

Terrible speakers, though.
 
Why are some considered "Bad", like the 1x15 - 4x10 setup? Why do people say not to mix cab sizes?

It is more about mixing [DEL]speaker[/DEL] driver sizes than mixing cab sizes. To keep things simple:

a) Potential phase issues when you have different [DEL]speakers[/DEL] drivers reproducing the same frequency range. It can sound ok or it can sound like crap, why take the risk.

b) Volume differences. The 1x15 will be displacement limited way before the 4x10. In other words, the 1x15 cannot take as much power as the 4x10 which is a problem when you are driving both speakers with the same amp. The 4x10 is much louder.

It is more about mixing speaker sizes than mixing cab sizes.
The practice of mixing driver sizes (a speaker is what you get when you put a driver into a cabinet) is predicated on the assumption that larger drivers go lower, smaller drivers go higher, and you get a wider bandwidth when you mix them. The problem is that assumption is wrong. Where electric bass drivers are concerned there's very little difference between how low or how high they go based on size, not enough difference to make mixing sizes the least bit worthwhile.
Drivers that do have very significant differences in how low and how high they go do exist, and when used along with a crossover to send lows into low frequency drivers, mids into midrange drivers and highs to high frequency drivers the results are quite good. That's what hi-fi and PA cabs have done since the 1930s. But the use of that technology with electric bass is very rare. A few companies offer it on a limited basis, like the Avatar 153, most don't offer it at all.

In the one experiment I did, I did not try to bottom out the speakers but the 410TVX was a little louder than the 115BX BW for the same volume setting. (I did an A/B swap of the two cabs from the same combo amp).

I did not notice any phase issues between the two. The two cabs essentially sounded the same with a slight tweak of the tweeter pots (the 410 has a tweeter, the 115 doesn't).

Yeah, the average 4x10 should be more efficient.

A 30" circle does not have the same area as two 15" circles.

The formula for area of a circle is pi*radius*radius.
radius of a 30" circle is 15"
radius of a 15" circle is 7.5"
pi is about 3.14
so,
area of 30" circle =~ 3.14 * 15 * 15 = 706.50"
area of two 15" circles =~ 2 * (3.14*7.5*7.5) = 353.25"

so the 30" circle has twice the are of BOTH 15" circles.
Another way to say it is that the 30" circle has four times the area of of a 15" circle.

The reason you don't get double the area with double the radius is because area is a 2-dimensional quantity and radius is 1-dimensional. The 2-d quantity has something squared in it (radius*radius).

However,

As for why they had to use superlight materials for the EV 30" cone, consider that they had to push the mass of the cone. Mass relates to volume, a 3-dimensional measurement. The volume of the cone (area * thickness) would go up with something cubed. So, doubling the radius would raise the mass by something like eightfold (two to the third power = 8).

It's an engineering thing. Even Eminence freely mixes up the terms, mainly so as not to confuse lay people with thinking about this

Quite a while back, a guy posted the formula for a conical frustum here for figuring how much volume a driver takes up inside the box. I just take the diameter of the backplate/magnet, the diameter of the basket where it comes through the baffle, average the two and use that to figure the volume of a cylinder. It's close enough but is it the same?

As long as we're having fun with geometry here.
