What's the LARGEST possible speaker? I'm talking about what's possible.

So question: In large PA speaker array installations, to me, there is a curve that the speakers follow. I am talking about the arrays they hang on both sides of the stage in large events. Is the curve and width/length ratio of those arrays specific? @agedhorse and others
Used primarily for ~100Hz and up, the curve and the element to element spacing dictates the coverage pattern and the energy distribution within the pattern.

For example, in the typical J array, the spacing (included angle) increases and the number of individual elements decreases for the bottom of the hang, which reduces the energy in the smaller included area, resulting in a (hopefully) constant energy density or SPL.

The longer the array, the larger the number of elements, the lower the frequency of effective pattern control.

I have developed several line array systems that went into commercial production, but ultimately that industry got dominated by a few very large companies and was targeted at more of the touring side of the industry and away from the MI side where I found more creativity existed.
 
EV did have a 30” driver, it was VERY low power and IIRC used a paper over thin styrofoam cone (like foam core board).

It’s one of the few drivers I have never reconed for even seen in person. They were targeted at the high end hi-fi industry primarily.

It seems like all the very large speakers have low power handling ratings. Is this related to the structural problems of such a large driver that were mentioned earlier?
 
A few years ago I was at a surplus electronics place. They had these big speaker cabinets (they were like folded horn cabinets). The guy there said they came from the U S Air Force and had 24" speakers inside. He said that the speakers were used to simulate earthquakes.
 
Back in the 80’s I worked in a high end audio store that sold a line of speakers called Apogee. The flagship model was the Scintilla. The non electrostatic flat panel full range drivers were about 20” wide by about 6’ tall . They were a one ohm speaker :wideyed:. They needed very specific amplifiers. Fortunately we sold Krell amps. We drove them with KSA 100 100 Watt monoblocks. To this day it’s the closest I’ve ever heard to live music.

I remember these... we had a speaker reconing biz in Cincinnati in the 70's and one of the older downtown theaters had them. My partner actually did the reconing however.

How tall are yours? Their current offerings look to be 5 or 6 ft tall.
