What's the LARGEST possible speaker? I'm talking about what's possible.

So question: In large PA speaker array installations, to me, there is a curve that the speakers follow. I am talking about the arrays they hang on both sides of the stage in large events. Is the curve and width/length ratio of those arrays specific? @agedhorse and others
To add to @agedhorse's excellent response -- yes, the curve and the way the array is flown is very specific to the situation. In rigging a system in a venue, the first thing the tech for a line array system does is enter a few parameters into a 'calculator' (really just a fancy spreadsheet) provided by the system manufacturer. Those parameters are essentially just the number of elements in the array, the height of the array, and the nearest and farthest points of desired coverage; with that data, the calculator specifies the angle between each of the adjacent boxes in the array, which is then assembled with those angles set with the variable rigging system. In that way, the array is shaped to provide the optimum coverage for the specific venue, in the manner described by Andy.

The variable rigging system contained in every line array cab is a substantial part of the cost, especially when multiplied by the number of cabs that comprise just one system.

Line array speakers provide wider dispersion than a random placement of boxes and they curve the speakers to cover the front rows in a way that doesn't cause as many time-alignment issues (fewer phase cancellations). A couple of rows of speakers covers the middle without obscuring the stage. The crossovers are set so the transition from the flown speakers and subs is relatively seamless unless they screw up but experienced sound crews know how to do this well. The RTA at the board will show them if they did it right because the response won't have giant notches.

The horizontal pattern of a line array in no wider but the vertical pattern of each element APPEARS narrower when the total vertical pattern of the array is divided by the number of elements in the array. (this applies to the low/mid frequency section, the high frequency section's pattern is dictated be that element's design and how the designer intends it to integrate.

TBH I have no idea where this is from... Just another one of those pics from the great void. I kinda (like super duper really) doubt that's a real speaker of any kind... but now that I've said that I will be descended upon by trolls who have German schematics of the speaker itself (and also then not being the largest one) and then bills of sale with some weird anagram to Macca to prove how this was used in the recording of some Beatles record and can only be heard on the 65 vinyl release when played backwards.

I think the photo is funny in context.

Way back in the mid-1970s I had a bandmate who was a Hartley fanatic, kept insisting that their drivers were infinitely better than the much more popular JBL or E-V speakers of that era. He may have been right: He showed up with a home-built 1x10" cabinet loaded with a Hartley speaker as his bass amp...which it worked just fine as, much better low- and high-end than any single 10" in 1975 had any right to ...and then 2 years later he installed that exact same cabinet as a full-range mono monitor in a recording studio control room. Records were mixed on it. Uncanny.

Came in to post ^^^this. I had posted that same sub on TB a while back; I've met some of the engineers from Ascendo and they're dead serious about that thing...they consider it a sub-subwoofer, designed to fill in just that <20Hz range below a conventional [sic] subwoofer.

A guy I knew in the early '80s had a stereo with a 24" Hartley sub to cover the bottom end of his stereo that had Magnepan Tympani speakers for mains and some super tweeters (don't know what, in particular). :bassist:
