whats this effect?

In Would? I believe the bass sound comes a spector played with a pick through an overdriven amp.. if you want to get close with a pedal, maybe an overdrive pedal with actual tubes in it on a moderate to low gain would work. I have no experience with any pedal like that so don't take my word for it.

Oh, and in Angry chair, the intro is drums and guitar, not bass.

I remember playing that riff with the pick turned a bit sideways. This is what my 13-year-old self always assumed was the proper technique to achieve said sound. But back then I also thought that the tone of distorted guitars came from using a metal pick. Apparently I was a believer in technique over gear at that time in my life.

Wow, this is the first time I might have had something right back then as opposed to now. We really do get dumber as time goes on!
