What's wrong with me - can't stop shopping :-)

I'm also guilty of this. I have a stable of 3 to 4 basses that I always reach for first, but I also am always looking for that magic combo of Franken Fender parts. I have hit that combo 3 times, but am always searching. The TB classifieds have made this problem worse (or better?). I'm so glad to be off Ebay, I only use it as a last resort. Speaking of stuff for sale, check this out.

It is a TB inflicted affliction. Before I joined TB 3 years ago, I had the same basses and amps for 25 years, all excellent gear and totally satisfying. Since I joined I have purchased two more amps and two more basses (all here on TB) and am actively looking at more. I can only blame TB, damn you! I can only assume the pedal GAS will kick in soon. Thanks TB.

I'm right there with you. I try to sell stuff to buy other stuff but it doesn't always work out that way. I have a great understanding wife as well. She just rolls her eyes and let's me do my thing. I can only imagine if I was single how much more stuff I would buy for no reason!

I've been shopping for a particular bass for a while. Finally found one. You'd think that would be the end of the bass shopping, but no.

Why, oh why, would I continue to check classifieds? I already achieved my goal. I should stop.

I suspect I'm not alone....
I would say that as long as your wife/girlfriend isn't complaining go for it I am lucky my wife for the most part lets me buy what I want!

GAS is what many of us live for! Especially a semi-retired musician like myself who's getting back into the game, I LOVE GAS!!
AS some of our esteemed colleagues say "Don't fight it". Become one with GAS. Just try to make smart purchases that you can at least re-sell at a margin of profit. Leaves more room in your wallet for more gear!

It's a bit of an addiction--there is some pleasure in acquiring something new (see comments above re hunter-gatherers, thrill of the chase, G.A.S.) but it doesn't provide true satisfaction, so you quickly search again to get another pleasant but ultimately unsatisfying "hit." This is my take on it but I don't have a solution! Gimme another hit!

Yes. I can blame talkbass as well!

You can blame talkbass but talkbass isn't the problem. Talkbass is the REASON!

Look. GAS properly managed works like this: Music isn't a static thing. It's always changing. Gear is changing. Musical styles are changing and the gear needed to produce those new styles appears too.

So maybe you've got your nice Fender P-bass 4 string with flats burst and tort guard and are in a nice comfortable rut playing the same old thing the same old way for the same old bucks. But then you look into Talkbass. And lo, you hear people talking about all sorts of other things. Basses with more strings, basses with no frets, bass brands you never even heard of. And sure the P-bass guys are still there too, but you start to get curious... And if a person has a question about something new, how do you find out if that is right for you? Simple. You have to buy one and live with it for a while. by the time you are done you will know if you keep it or sell it.

Therefore as you enter the acquisition stage you get GAS as you start scanning for the next new thing to try. And you have the fun of searching for just the right one at just the right price to buy. And enjoying that the day comes when you find it and NBD ensues. And of course there are pictures and celebrations all around. But it's not "happily ever after"! Because RIGHT THERE. Right after NBD is when you are supposed to leave the computer off, forget TB classifieds and Craig's list and be spending the honeymoon alone with your new bass personally finding out what it is about it and if that's for you! Gas should not be permitted to set in again until you know for sure what it is about the last thing!

The horrible disease of early onset GAS happens when that final learning stage is ignored and excuses are made like I'll learn about TWO new things at once after I buy the next item. Sure you will! NOT! Recognize it for the denial it is! Proper GAS keeps you learning! Early onset GAS keeps you from playing your bass and broke as well.

Say no more!
