Whats Wrong With Modern Teenagers?

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you assuming that all US teens are like that? Because I'm pretty sure I'm not. I do have it relatively nice compared to third world countries, yes, but I still work hard and try to do good in school. And don't assume that everybody from your home country had to work as you did.
Sorry if I come off as a jerk saying this, and I don't mean to be one, but I had to point it out.

"Question your assumptions."

you should live were i do, everyone between 10 and 19 have an asbo
they are clueless as to what expression is and probabaly dislike the idea of it,
my brother being one of them sometimes makes me think im lucky because if i didnt know em thru my brother id get some bad abuse.

'get an hair cut U swettttie!!!'

Well, through no real fault of their own, they're generally spoilt, poorly educated, have a short attention span due to over stimulation and have often been inadequately brought up by parents with precious little moral or intellectual authority.

I imagine that fits most of the posters on TB, that I don't recognise....:p

Kids are no different now than when any of us where that age. The only thing that has changed is the toys they play with.

Actually that makes a big difference - so there was a TV programme on this last night about how different kids were in the 70s to now!

So - in the 70s kids were out playing in fields and parks - meeting other kids, playing outdoor games like football and getting loads of exercise. TV was boring and most didn't have their own bedroom or anything much to keep them there!

Nowadays - kids spend most of their time alone in their bedrooms, glued to their PC or Games Console - never doing any exercise and never meeting another person unless online !! :p

I hated my generation, just out of their teens for a decade or less now. This current run is completely screwed. Frankly I hav e just lost faith in the American culture as it stands today, and am breathlessly awaiting a cataclysmic event that will wipe the slate clean and allow the normal folks to return to the forefront.

Hahaha I think I see what you're saying... for example I couldn't help but groan in disgust one day between classes when i saw a girl wearing a brokencyde shirt. If you've ever heard of them, you'd understand why I expressed my dislike. If not, here's a link, and prepare to hate our generation even more:
just this whole generation of materialistic obsession accompanied with the downfall of beautiful (and/or coherent) music makes me wonder why I even try anymore -_-

Another instance: rap music, two different songs by the same *ahem* 'artist', one was titled 'Let's all get drunk tonight', the other 'Let's all get high tonight'. Guess what lyrics the entire song was composed of.
Well I suppose I should keep playing try and do my part of the recovery then...

(and let's be brutally honest for a moment, none of the guys in that video get "freaky" as often as they imply.)

The "music" in that link is truly shocking. And a lucid argument for the immediate destruction of pitch correction devices.

Yeah, she was flirting and you blew it. :smug:

I do get what you mean though. I am no teenager myself but I recently crossed paths with one who saw my bass on its stand. He said it was cool and then stated that he loved music and was into guitar. Then he proceeded to tell me that his favorite songs to play were by Aerosmith and Blue Oyster Cult. I asked him what kind of guitar he played and he said, "Huh? Oh... no, I don't have a guitar... I'm talking about Guitar Hero."

:eyebrow:

The last teenager I ran into was in a music store. I was playing around, and he started asking me questions. Things like, why is your hand positioned like that, how are you doing that, and otehr good questions. This basically evolved into him grabbing a bass, and me throwing him an off the cuff freebie lesson. I do not teach, but I admit it was fun.

I think there is nothing wrong with teenagers today that has not always been wrong with them. Most are just a product of their environments, and are not sure of who they are so they try a lot of stuff.

brokencyde .... If you've ever heard of them, you'd understand why I expressed my dislike. If not, here's a link, and prepare to hate our generation even more:

Ya know I listen to many genres of music, but man this video/music had no redeeming qualities at all. None of the 5 band membres are playing instruments, the idoit in pink is screaming, and choking a girl's neck. ETC.ETC. Just Horrible.

I'm going to listen to some Bach/Tallis NOW, cuz thats how far removed I want to be from those brokencyde a-hls.

Makes you wonder how long this topic has been discussed. Probably centuries. Every generation seems to believe the generation(s) following after them are worthless, corrupt, lazy, [insert your own criticism here], etc.

I'm 16, and yes, there are plenty of pampered little punks in my generation that could use a butt whupping. There's also plenty that are humble, decent, and hardworking. The problem is that the first group makes a much bigger fuss, giving us all the negative stereotype. We're not all perfect, but we're also not all worthless whiny resource-consuming cretins.

And as far as modern day music goes, I kinda agree with you guys, kinda disagree. Some good, some bad. I mainly listen to 70's anyway.

I'd just like to say that the most intelligent conversation I've had in the past couple of years was waiting in line to check out some books at the library. With a fourteen year-old boy. He was remarkably well-informed about current events and highly political astute.

It gave me a ray of hope.

Your average teenager has nothing in their heads but which hair gel to use, which of their old friends to stab in the back so they can get in good with the more "popular" crowd, and which currently popular musician has the best hair style.

But every once in a while, you run into one who realizes that God gave them a brain and intended for them to use it. Appearances to the contrary, all it not lost.
