What's wrong with schecter basses??

Back then Schecters were legit - but then they went off shore, like the companies you mention (and no, I'd never own a skyline, metro or tribute. My money, I spend it where I choose).
Who cares where they're made? Oh right! American pride! Right. I don't get that...cuz I live in Canada...where we don't care about where quality goods are made.
Well...I live in Alaska. I don't care what an instrument's country of origin is, as long as it plays good, and sounds good.
I do have to confess that when I do get a new Schecter; the aforementioned Stiletto Studio 6 FL, I'll probably pull out the HZ pups and put in some EMG CS'.
Try the HZ's first. I had them in 3 basses of mine & they're great passives.
The bad reviews you see are usually from people expecting the tone of an EMG DC.
Canadian jobs are lost, too, when folks outsource their labor and materials. Lots of guitar makers are in Canada - or source their parts/wood from there.
This is my main bass these days, it's a Hellraiser Extreme-5. Made in Korea with factory installed EMG 40TW pickups which are individually switchable to Humbucker or Single Coil mode via the volume knobs which are push/pull. It's just a killer all around bass. Anyone who'd crap on this doesn't know what the hell their talking about.

Every one that I've played was built really well and sounded nice. Though offshore, I think they make decent basses. Probably the best built bass for the money, in that price range.
My own personal gripes are the fact that they are 35" scale on the 5s, which aren't comfy for me, and the fact that they are marketed to a "nu metal" crowd. Basically, a lot of design cues they use are ugly in my eyes and I wouldn't really want one... But everyone has their own taste, and I wouldn't dog anyone for playing one.
Fast necks, great fretwork, clear tonality. No issues with that!

I thought out of the "box" the bass was ready to play (Omen-5). Have been happy with the tone and playability. Never had an issue (3+ years now). This instrument isn't used for recording, mellow times, or avant-garde music. I bought it for my main on-stage bass. It delivers hard pounding rock and roll. That is what I wanted, that is what I got.

I had a Schecter for about a year and it was a great instrument. The only reason I moved on from it was because it just felt small to me - narrow neck somewhat delicate small body. But there are lots of different models and I had no problem with the sound or build quality. Also lots of players prefer that body style and neck profile so no hate here for Schecters. Plus, the instruments themselves always seem to be very "pretty" with the finishes and flourishes.
People I know who have owned them seemed to like them, like with any piece of gear it either works for you or it doesn't but will probably work well for someone else.

I don't think there's anything "wrong" with them, really. They just aren't my cup of tea. I just prefer the tone of Warwicks, Washburns, or (my favorite) Music Man. But I do like the Stiletto, if it's any help. I think they look awesome, but just don't have what I look for.
Canada is an export industry. There's very little harm done by small manufacturers & call centres moving over seas. There are still plenty of jobs here. The problem is that the employers are trying to fill those jobs with Temporary Foreign Workers, instead of Canadians. I'm much more concerned about the jobs in Canada being available to Canadians than I am about a small percentage of jobs being moved overseas.
Its hard to say, but they just don't jump out at me. They have a lot of different models, but of course stores will have 1 or 2 if any, so you can't really get a feel for the instrument you might be looking for. The bodies are a little uninspired as are the finishes. They seem to like fake pearl bindings and fake quilt finishes, and I'm not a fan of either. The only model that's grabbed me attention is the C4/C5 Custom because it is configured like my Lakland (J/MM) but the current model doesn't have a switch for the MM pickup.
I used to have a studio 5 I think or it might have been a custom not sure , traded a mim p-bass for it , pretty decent bass didn't really have any problems with it Ended up selling it for 250.00 I look back now I should of kept it , it had a sweet ass case too .. Oh well, I just remembered had another schecter it was black and had stripper inlays , now that bass seemed kind of cheaply made but she is long gone so whatever .. But I still wouldn't trash schecter there basses seem pretty decent for the price ..
Do you live in Canada? Do you actively search our job market? Do you know the daily ins & outs of our politics & the issues at hand? Probably not.
I was able to find a left handed 4 string fretless bass that is a Schecter Diamond P Custom. Never looked at Schecter before because of the whole NU-Metal look of some of their models, but I ran across the one I recently bought online and fell in love with the look of it. It has a walnut body and it is my heaviest bass, even heavier then my 80's Fender P-Bass.
Schecter is the brand that I want to like but, haven't found one yet that I've kept. For me Schecters look great and sound good but, just feel "off".
I do want to pick up a Stargazer and Model T at some point though.
