What's Your Bass/Guitar's Name?

I have two old Yamaha BB basses. The defretted one I painted black. I call it "Blackie". The unfretless one is that light yellow color lots of old Yamahas have. I call it "Ol' Yeller". I guess my girls are, well, more like dogs. By name, I mean.

For some reason, naming a bass a girl name seems odd to me, not sure why. Mine are:

Stingray 5: Trinity (only girl name)
Lakland JO5: Rufus (just came to me when I was looking at it)
MTD Kingston: Blackie Lawless (it's black w/ matching headstock)
SX Jazz- Frankie J

Never have. Never will. To me it'd be like naming a drill. I was in a shop the other day where a couple were buying their ~11 year old kid his first instrument & dad says, "Now you gotta name it," & the kid rolls his eyes, "I'm not gonna name it."

Well I call my five string just "the five"
My fretless is "The banana bass" it's yellow
and my 66 lefthanded jazz is "the devils bass" It has the date 6/66 engraved on the body

I do name my basses but after my favourite bassists... My Fender was Steve(harris) and my stingray was Pino. Currently playing a Sandberg which yet to be named though.

I'm named after the flawed hero prince in a science fiction series (Corwin), my sister is named after the realm that the royal family lives in (Amber) and in the story Corwin's son is named Merlin. My little brother is called Arthur.

My Ibanez 506 is named after Corwin's lover/nemesis in the series, Dara. Figured I wouldn't be able to name my wife so this fits perfect.

I had a cheap Jazz that I called Veronica, sold her

The Wishbass is named Steve French, (a Trailer Park Boys reference) the J is named Rita, (because it's so pretty that it needed a girl's name) and the 8-string is named Nathan (after Withnail, not Explosion.)

Thanks, I'm an awfully proud parent.

I set the spacing on the 8-string the way I did to avoid having the regular & octave strings rattle together. On a fretted 8- or 12-string it's always seemed like part of the sound to me, but on a fretless it seemed to me like it would be out of place.

glad to see there are some guy names on here too...I think I might name my next one a guy name...not sure tho-I guess it depends on the personality.
You see, I automatically started calling my pink bass "Pinky". When I got my second bass, I didn't think of naming it, but some started asking me, so I just started naming them...

I also have a Washburn Dreadnought I call "the Tank," because of the way it's built. All my other basses and guitars are generic -- the Upright, the Strat, the Dot, the Fretless, the Folk, etc.

My current bass is named Max. But I'm selling him. I'm sure his replacement -- to be purchased as soon as Max sells -- will tell me his name sooner or later.

I call my Carvin LB75 Flamed Koa wood bass "Carvy" and my two SWR Cabs-{Betty for the smaller 4x10} and {Bartholemew for the 4x12} Silly huh?
