What's your gig?

What's beneath a dive bar?

A Foosball Arcade?

That's where my first paying gig was at Fourteen. I made less than ten bucks, IIRC, but discovered that girls like the boys in the band...

Since then over the course of the 43 subsequent years, all the way from Dive Bars to Arenas, and everything in-between, 90% were fun, though some were more work than others. :)

Cover band: Mostly clubs, often in college towns. Occasional weddings. Citi Field for 40,000. $125 min. per man per gig, often more.
Original band: Mainly the guitarist's basement. Occasional open mics. Open for other bands. Free water, sometimes a beer. Validated parking if lucky.

After 20 years of teaching I just took a position as assistant principal. It's a longer drive and more hours (came with a decent raise, so it's worth it) and now I have less time for music. Had to quite one of the bands. Not a hard decision, I quit the cover band.

I'm in a TX country act right now. We play clubs and private parties. It's a mix of covers and originals. I'm about ready to jump ship and start work with a different artist. It'll be the same thing, TX country stuff. Hopefully the new gig will will be more showcase gigs and less all night gigs.

My main gig is for the US Army band, so id say 80-90% of gigs are ceremonies or parades playing cymbals, my main instrument is bass(of course;)) I play with the pop show band and now the big band so we play high schools, military balls, down in Waikiki at a military hotel there right on the beach, so I can't complain about the bass playing part of my job!!

I also play in a original metal band for fun on the side, with this group we've only played at bars and soon I'm gonna start subbing for a Salsa group!! With the Army most gigs are outdoor events both with marching or the pop group, so no bars(I think that even illegal if I'm not mistaken?!),but we have got to open for a few national acts that played on base.

Before coming to Schofield I was at Ft Bliss where I played lots of bass, about 50-50 upright/electric in the pop group, jazz combo, salsa group, big band and concert band and I was in 2 side gigs most of the time there!!

So in the last 5 years I think I've averaged about easily 3-4 gigs a week(I should've kept track), not counting side gigs!! Prior to this, I've played nothing but original's for like 12 years(didn't make a dime, all metal bands;)), a bunch of different cover bands, a few different tribute acts and a gimmicky wedding band, ill just say, its never a dull moment;)

With my classic rock band: Clubs, restaurants, resorts, private parties, if it is anywhere off I-91 in Connecticut, we've probably played there. And our home base, the Free Spirit, in Vernon CT.

With my country band: Larger clubs, VFW halls, German-American and Polish-American private clubs.

3 piece bar band- oldies to a little current music w/ the occasional "corporate" gigs, (chamber of commerce type of deals). I play for a band leader, he does the bookings etc, I play the songs, and am paid a flat rate. Currently doing +/- 100 gigs a year.

It seems like there is a lot of disagreement over topics and I think much of it centers around different types of gigs and one person taking another's comment and applying it directly to their gig which probably doesn't make sense. So share your gig! Who is doing dive bars? Who's doing wedding bands, churches, brother in law's BBQ, etc, etc?
We Been playing lots of local festivals with the blues and rock cover band. From the Tomato fest to the Cotton Fest. Best part is playing CCR's Cotton Fields.

Very inspiring and some great gigs!

I play in a 50s-70s cover band specializing in a mini Elvis set. We do 3-5 gigs a year, a car show, a couple catholic festivals, a city park concert, a family party here and there. Was really burning out on this group hard until....

...my latest project, the R&B band. The people in it have all gigged out before, so we're working on tunes, adding players, and we're looking to be gig ready in 3 months, or roughly January, and we're right on schedule. These people also have played some jazz, although not in this project, and other sophisticated stuff, so this is a step up for me in terms of the material and quality band members.

It's cool, me and the drummer have hit it off well, so he wants to do other projects with me since I'm close by and play well with others.

I play in an originals hard rock/metal band called Nephilym. We didn't do a ton of shows in 2015. Here's the small list of venues we played in 2015. We're currently writing and plan get back in the studio soon before gigging a lot in 2016.

Drunk horse pub (Fayetteville, NC)
Rock shop music hall (Fayetteville, NC)
Ziggys by the sea (Wilmington, NC)
Hooligans (Jacksonville, NC.

We have done some big festivals including the dogwood festival in Fayetteville NC where we co-headlined, The FT Bragg Forth of July opening for Tonic and lifehouse, Bayfest in Mobile Alabama with a ton of huge acts. And NC metal fest.

Most of our shows over the years have been in Fayetteville NC which is where the band formed. We have played most of the great venues in NC including Winston Salem, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro,
Carborro, chapel hill, Jacksonville, and Wilmington. We've also played myrtle beach SC, Columbia SC, Atlanta, Tallahassee fl and as I mentioned above mobile Alabama. Considering the genre we play we're old dogs in a younger scene these days, all in our mid 30s and we typically play with younger bands with one exception which is "the Fifth" who are long time buddies of ours that we've done a few gigs with.

Here's a promo video we made with album audio and some live footage from the drunk horse show from this past summer.

And our latest album is available on iTunes as well as Amazon, X box music and so on.

The Lowry brothers (Clint from sevendusts/dark new day and Corey now with Saint Asonia and formerly with stuck mojo, eye empire, dark new day, amongst others and also their younger brother Dustin who we did a lot of gigs with a few years back in his old local band Downs lane ) they are from the same town we started in (which two of our members still reside) and their projects have been a huge influence on us for a long time. great guys with great work ethic and attitudes, and always a good time when they come back through town.
