What's your local music scene like?

Here in Indianapolis its coming back to life and pretty wide range from acoustic to full blown electrnica. It went from music to meat market for a long time. We have mainly smallish places (300-500 people) being a large venue. But we get a pretty good range of shows.... Yellow Jackets may play festival in July and come back to a 50 person club and play 2 shows in October, this Friday "Freakbass" will play at a shotgun bar that can only get 30-40 at the most in the room the kicker is Bootsy is his MGR and may show up as well...this place is tiny.
Various styles of open stages rock, blues, R&B Jazz. as well as a good number of college town places. Rant...although they are becoming more and more "puss-a-fide" with city wide smoking banz..if you don't want to go there... DON'T...If you are afraid of heights, you don't get a job as a high rise window washer.

you mean the classic rock cover band and three hardcore bands. I actually respect the hardcore bands' energy, but theyre one dimensional and boring.

so music scene i would say is not too great... and i live in california. what the heck:scowl:

lol, what part? If you're like in Fresno or in like Redding, I could understand the bad music.

i live in upstate new york.schenectady to be exact,and just like most of yours,there is mainly alot of hardcore/metalcore screamo bands(which need to be weeded out IMO.).there are a good handful of those bands up here,they are the predominate part of the music scene around here.there are a few other kinds of bands,like i saw a jimi hendrix/classic blues rock kind of band in albany.also in my hometown,i know this really underground jazz/prog. fusion band.

i used to be in a alt. rock/grunge band about a year ago.i know that there are a few other straight up rock bands around here as well.i'm currently in a metal/metalcore band too,but i don't take it seriously cause it's pretty much a high school band(i'm the only memeber that isn't in high school)
and we never get much done,so everyone is about to split on that anyway.i am trying to start an prog/expiramental group which i hope to get started on within the year,i just need ALOT of equipment...:rolleyes:
but yeah,pretty diverse,rock music scene pretty much

Island up north of Seattle. There's one blues band of old timers, a jazz quintet.......and a lot of guys that play guitar.....and most of the guitar players are into more pop/rock, Chili Peppers and David Bowie.......and I like rock/blues......to sum up, there isn't a big scene, if you hadn't realised that already........

Western MA/ Northern CT... a veritable pit of hardcore bands that all sound the same. Over the last few years labels came through and picked up bands like Killswitch Engage and the Acaica Strain, so now every kid six months into lessons think they can be the next big western mass hardcore band.

however, because of all this, there are lots of small places to play, because people actually go out to see these 6 or so hardcore bands play the same song over and over, and most venues do two or three hardcore shows a month to pay their overhead and then spread the other nights to different genres.

As an ambient indie rocker, I actually love the crowds north of the mass pike. All of our best shows were there because the kids there love to go see shows and love to sing along and dance and give something back to the musicians, especially the other rock bands, rather than just standing there with their arms crossed too self conscious to enjoy themselves like most of western mass.

The northerners have an ear for good music but also don't discriminate. south of the pike if you don't start with a breakdown everyone walks outside until you finish or sits on a couch and barely pays attention.

two bands from your area really caught my eye when they had shows around here, Robots and Empire (really good stoner doom rock band) and The Cast Before the Break (amazing ambient rock) I also tend to like new york hardcore bands a bit better, probably because the good ones travel and the highschoolers have homework to do, young man.

The music scene is pretty good around these parts. I'm in a cover band, so those are the folks I rub shoulders with most frequently. There's plenty of work out there for covers.

There are also some good opportunities for original bands too. I don't get out and see too many original groups (I'm always gigging myself) but my nephew's Hippie Jam Band was awarded best Original CD last year. And then they broke up! Link Removed

All in all, things are pretty good in my little corner of the world.

I'm at home in Regensburg (or Ratisbon) in Bavaria, Germany :D
Theres a music college here, some music schools, some high schools with special musical education... so as you can guess theres more bands than anyone could count :D
From Blues to Rock to Metal you can find nearly everything here :D. I like it.

Here in bargain capital of Canada (Winterpeg) there are quite a few nice venues to play, but the bar owners aren't willing to fork over the cash to pay for quality live entertainment.:rollno: (I realize this most likely not just a local phenomenon)

As well, our band plays the local bues, classic rock, R&B circuit and what I've noticed is that these venues and certain other bands are very clique-y (my new word of the day!). Certain bands show up VERY regulary in rotation at the more popular venues, while other bands (equally talented) get the shaft.

Oh well, what can you do.:scowl:

The cover band scene (as far as getting gigs) is getting pretty poor around here. Pay is down, gigs are down, and with the GM/Chrysler bankruptcies - I don't see it getting a lot better any time soon.

Lots of UAW guys are the bar band clientele for the metro Detroit area.

We just had our gig for this saturday canceled at the last minute because the bar owner isn't sure he'll make enough money to pay us - $150 plus $3 per person cover...
