What's your local music scene like?

Las Vegas;

A butt load of mediocre 80's rock cover bands, driving the level of showmanship & pay into the dirt
married duos moving here from everywhere trying to be the next "big show lounge act"
awesome musicians with sour attitudes, so they get no work
lack of commitment (everyone's a sub)
not much of an underground scene, although there are a few great musicians & bands
awesome "big production" shows, hard to land those gigs, but they pay good
ok Jazz scene, see "musicians with attitudes" why do Jazz cats think they're better than every one else?

I'm jaded, being both sideman and leader, dealing with Vegas musicians can be trying...
but I did manage to put together a bad a$$ trio with some cool cats, we'll see...

I was very interested and surprised reading this thread. I noticed two cats from my area with two different opinions than my own. Perhaps, ones idea of his/her music scene is more of a state of mind, and could be rooted in their specific role in that "scene". Example; if you're a rock guy, you may notice more of that scene that you would say country, even though the country scene may be doing very well in your area. Of course that was just an example. Does anyone else feel like that could be a possibility? Am I crazy?

Yes! you're not crazy...
Not only is it the individuals role in that scene, but his or her state of mind.
I'm sure someone could see Vegas different than me,
especially because I've become jaded...

Little Rock-- It spawned Evanescence and Ne-Yo, thats about it. You've got teenage poppunkscreamohardcoreposthardcore bands or country here for the most part, take your pick. Both are pretty stagnate. However, there also seems to be a flourishing underground hip hop scene here as well. I make the sacrifice and drive two hours to Memphis on a pretty regular basis.

hmm... cumbria. well, in cockermouth we have masses of small bars with a few with regular live music, it's mostly blues and rock, covers and originals. also got a theater that puts on music, rarely rock, mostly artsy stuff from around the world - one week i went to see freutland jackson& bob hall (freutland plays acoustic blues, bob hall is a blues/boogie pianist) the next week I saw a taiko drumming group. we've got a few good venues around, like monroes in workington, and the brickyard in carlisle. lots of rock/metal/hardcore bands about, a few indie groups and lots of blues :) as far as festivals are concerned, there is cockrock, solfest and maryport blues festival, all of which are good. oh, and the sands center in carlise gets some big acts... 10cc and jools holland have played there, overall, pretty good here, but i cant comment on payment, as i dont gig much.

Winnipeg is a city of 700,000 with a large music scene as musicians flock here due to the low cost of living relative to the rest of Canada.

Classic rock is the best paying bar circuit with 5 large clubs, 10 small clubs and about 30 bands that rotate through them.

Country Rock is the second best paying circuit with 2 large clubs, dozens of small gigs/clubs in the city and within two hours drive. There are usually about 20 bands playing a mix of country rock and classic rock.

Blues/R&B/Funk has about 10 medium-small clubs and about 25 bands.

Assorted Metal with 2 clubs that pay the band with the cover charge and about 200 bands of various types of metal.

Jazz bands have about 5 clubs and way too many musicians.

I play in a rock band, a country rock band and I'm putting together a R&B/Funk band.

Below is a sample of one week of bookings.

In the middle of NO-Where Illinois, Quincy to be exact. The scene around here is pretty decent for being a town of about 50,000. I am just now starting to get back into it after taking an 8 year hiatus. Mostly cover bands, with the majority of them being classic rock. There are a couple of really good original bands here, one really good hard rock band and one really good jam band (cross between Pink Floyd and Dave Matthews Band, very good). The current band that I am in is covers, playing mostly 90s and new rock.

Mostly bar gigs. Fewer and fewer bars are having bands now a days, but the ones that do pay pretty well, usually $300 - $700 (for 4 hour gig) and you can always find two or three bars with bands on the weekend. There is one venue that has festivals twice a month usually 6 to 8 bands, it's pretty sweet.

Sacramento music scene is kinda blooming definately not easy to jump right into it. I would have to say promoters suck big time here and venues are kinda sketchy about new bands due to all the crap acts. overall it's okay not great though.

In Boston/eastern Mass. The pickings are rough. Most bars have gone to a showcase format 3-4 bands a night little or no $. There is a bit of a jazz scene and a few places playing blues/classic rock/roots music but unless you're well established pay is marginal at best. ($250-$400 band max) They changed the sprinkler laws here a couple years ago which lead to many of the mid sized clubs closing. There have been a few large venues opening here in the last couple years, but they bring in national or big regional acts. So unless you're a big name the best you can hope for is a band that is supporting your music habit, gear etc. and maybe a night out.

Western MA/Central MA

Most bands in our area are hardcore, metal, and a few indie bands. There's a few good cover bands trolling around, but they're few and far between. Most of the larger cities are dominated by harcore and metal. Especially the Worcester area. I like both forms of music, but it's a little tiresome going to the same show over and over again.

Another thing is that each city has it's own thing going. Sometimes they're glad to help "out of town" bands, but a lot of times they are very defensive of their "scene".

Basically if you want to hear fresh stuff you go to Northampton or Boston.

Victoria, British Columbia..

Lots of metal here, of various sub-genres, most of which ending in 'Core' .. we actually have a pretty cool website that kind of anchors the Victoria music scene - www.livevictoria.com .. but always someone trying to start a "DoomCore" or "SludgeCore" or "MetalCore" band or whatever.. and there used to be a lot of sloppy punk/screamo/hardcore bands here but we seem to have shifted over into Post-Hardcore now featuring the generic emo look of skinny jeans and black hair, with a smattering of ironic facial hair thrown into the mix.

Thankfully the alternative rock scene seems to be growing here, I'm noticing more shows with a fairly diverse set of bands on the bill. The venues around here don't seem terribly specific and it wouldn't be uncommon to see a bar with a mainstream/modern rock show one night and an all out metal-wank-fest the next.

Speaking of venues.. there are a few good ones that come to mind, but we certainly need more of them. Just off the top of my head I can think of maybe 5-10 bar or club type venues around that regularly put on shows, and maybe the same number of halls that get rented out for all-agers, etc.

Interestingly we have very few cover bands in town.

Houston,Texas

Pros-1.plenty venues to play,for all types of music.Bar gigs,resturant gigs,original music venues,tejano venues,zydeco venues,blues venues,rock venues.
2.A whole lot of good musicians here to work with.

Cons-1.City is spread out.You might have a 100 mile round trip to do a local gig.
2.Too many weekend warrior types bringing down the pay scale.

How true. Also, far fewer venues for jazz (unless you are thumping the doghouse) than a few years back due to restaurant closings

Island up north of Seattle. There's one blues band of old timers, a jazz quintet.......and a lot of guys that play guitar.....and most of the guitar players are into more pop/rock, Chili Peppers and David Bowie.......and I like rock/blues......to sum up, there isn't a big scene, if you hadn't realised that already........

sounds like something i could definitely dig, except for the exact kind of mimic rock that comes from these two sorts of influences. boo! i love me some RHCP tho! :D
