What kind of Cab for a standalone on a small Rig???

My "micro" rig is a Gallien 200MB.
When I use it is a stand-alone I add a piezo tweeter to get better treble response.

Yes, I know, piezos are terrible, but I use a 500 Ohm resistor in series, so it is not too loud and it sounds much better than you would think.

This rig sounds reasonably well in small acoustic settings but not when you have a drummer.

The system sounds MUCH better with the added Euphonic Audio CxL112 - nothing to complain about there. I can run only the EA when I need a very Hi-Fi sound or add the GK speaker for some midrange punch. The system is loud enough even for a moderate rock band setting. The 100 W of the power amp are, however, quite limiting volume wise.

To the side is my large rig, that run with a SWR Grand Prix and a 400 W power amp.

i had a chance to try out a pair of Acme B1's.

if you want a little "micro" rig for just mere "reinforcement". try an Acoustic Image Clarus with an Acme B1. sounded killer! had such surprising low end for such a puny little 30 lbs. box. sure, its not nearly loud enough for anything but jazz, coffee house gigs, or acoustic singer/songwriter stuff, but MAN, what a great little sound! literally dumbfounded me.

the Low B on my Elrick sounded simply huge. was enough to shake my apartment's floorboards. and my Azola upright sounded sublime. too good for words. if there was ever a sweeet "micro mini" rig. this would be it. no question.

but daaag, watch out for those korean cab drivers! :eek: about as bad as NYC cabbies! :D

whenever i put my cabs into the back of their cabs, i feel like i'm placing them in those New York Lotto tumblers! :hmm:

There's some reviews posted on their web site (www.hevos.nl), I basically agree with them even if they are written in the typical guitar magazine superlatives. I'd add that the cabinets are not super loud, and can distort slightly if you go heavy on the B string low notes (though that's partly because of the J-Retro preamps in my basses, they have some serious low-end), so a slight compression or limiting is good to take care of that. The cabs also need to be seen as a pair, either cab alone is not that great but together they are very nice. The sound is smooth and full, surprisingly big and warm for such small boxes, but still detailed and cuts through quite well. I was able to lower the volume considerably at rehearsal compared to my previous combo and I'm still heard over the other instruments. It is more of a warm/retro sound as opposed to modern/high-end, just what I like for fingerstyle and fretless. My band mates (who are not bass interested per se) have commented several times that they like the sound.

How 'bout 6 5"s? :D I am completely and totally sold on the amps/cabs/combos that Phil Jones is coming up with. Not only is his stuff cutom-tailored to slappers and extended range basses, but they add a level of detail, accuracy, clarity, and punch to fingerstyle players like me. And for larger rigs, if you haven't heard what a wall of 5"s sound like pumping and undulating in motion as one HUGE, MASSIVE wall of sound, then you haven't heard anything! PJB ROCKS!

My small rig is really really small. An AI Clarus on top of a Flite 110 w/ 5: mid. The whole combo weighs under 25 pounds. I'll snag a pic of it an post it soon. It has pulled it's weight many times over in clubs and coffehouse gigs for the past year+. I like to have a clean and transparent sound and this little rig does it. It also makes some hellacious grind if I hit the high-gain input hard with an active bass.

I can see why you didn't publish a picture on that rig. It would hardly be visible...
Then one wonders how you manage to find it when you are off to a gig :eek:

Seriously, what was that cab again? A Flite 110 with a 5" mid? Tweeter, too? Seems like a "special" to me - right or wrong? :confused:

Yeah, it was the last cab that Kurt made before handing over the keys to the operation, afaik. He had built me a 110 and a 110H. The 110 is a plain 1x10 in a ported cab and it sounds great, while the one with the horn sounded bad. I sent it back and he offered to make me one with a 5" mid in place of the horn. That cab is really nice. Between the two of them I can cover a lot of ground. The plain 110 weighs even less, like 17 pounds. I didn't get around to it but I will have a pic of the micro stack soon.

Small rigs? I have been playing with the idea of getting the Ag GS112 and a small head but, every time I do the small room, private party, small club gig with my Memesis 210 combo, I get back to reality. For my larger rooms and outdoor gigs my Eden Metro & 210XLT kick it. My tone remains consistant because of the Eden pre-amps and I have portability plus versatility. Both rigs handle my Mod Q5 and Smith 5 with ease and authority.

I have been on a dual obsession lately, of "ludicrously large rig" as well as "mighty mini rig." On the small rig side, I have managed to pick up quite a potpourri of smaller cabs. My initial mini rig was a Walkabout with an Epifani T-110UL and a T-112, and that rig really kicks. Now, however, I have the following smaller cabs laying around to work with:

Epi T-110UL
Epi T-112 (newer, deep version)
Epi T-112 (next to newest, shallower version)
EA VL-110
EA Wizzy WZ-112 (non-powered)
EA VL-208 (3 of these!)
Ashdown Mini 10T
Raezer's Edge Bass 10

I hope to do a mini shootout with all of these (both with the Walkabout and with my rack rig) on 4 and 5-string electric, ABG and URB. I'll post my findings once I get all the playing out of the way.:D :bassist:

Looking forward to the review Tom. Please do single as well as combination of cabs. Also (to help the Clarus and S220 users), you might try turning the Boogie down a bit and see if there's a noticeable change in tone when slightly underpowering (if I remember correctly the Clarus has a little less output than the Boogie).

Or you can load them all up, meet Joker halfway, rent a hall and found the Church of Heavenly Sound. Spend days doing cab and amp comparisons and write it all off as religous expenses. ;)
