When do you become an adult?

The question "When do you become an adult?" cannot be answered as presented. The term "adult" is too vague.

Mark talks about a person's ability to think as a way to determine "adulthood" - and that ability varies dramatically based on genetics, geography and gender.

Also, if a person who lives in a third-world country where one becomes an adult as soon as they can perform certain duties, like hunting, planting, building, reproducing etc... Adulthood can occur and a very early age by Western standards.

Furthermore, if one lives in a highly affluent and sheltered world - like Paris Hilton, for example - adulthood my never actually happen.

And so on...

But I'll play - my answer is 26 based on my dad's theory that it takes you 13 years to become a teenager and another 13 to get over it.

I heard this on a podcast the other day and I think its probably fairly accurate in the majority of cases. There are always exceptions.

"When you are 18 you start to have thoughts, they are not good thoughts, but they are coherent and you think they are good and worth sharing with everyone. When you are 23 you start to have good coherent thoughts about the world that adults might take seriously and you know when to, and not to shared them. When you are 25 your thoughts are generally worthwhile and other adults will recognise you as an adult."

Discuss.

What a load of ****.

I know plenty of people over 25 who are MORONS. I also know people who are younger than me that are just wiser.

An adult is someone who can take responsibility for their actions and realizes that some things are more important than they are.

I have met a great many people, rich and poor, smart and stupid. As far as I can tell, adulthood is actually transient. The depending factor is debt.

When you are in debt, you're an adult. When you are not in debt, you're just a grown up.

I think you're an adult when you can measure your life by how much crap you have to deal with. First it was just me. Occasional salsa @$$, some bad burritos, but nothing worse than a few extra wipes. Then I got a dog. Suddenly, I'm strutting around the neighborhood scraping poo off of lawns, and walking around (as if it's completely normal) with a plastic bag of steaming dog crap. Then my g/f, whose was 23 at time, has an AVM. She's in a coma for a 7 weeks after 14 hour brain surgery. Suddenly I'm wiping the girl of my dreams butt after she takes a crap (not to mention helping her sit on the toilet). Now I've got my own crap, my dog's crap, and her crap. She recovered to a semi-functional state, and after a couple of years I had to move on. Fast forward about 5 years and my son is born. Once again, I'm picking up crap. My crap, my dog's crap (around the neighborhood and in our backyard), and my son's crap. I'm not only analyzing my own output (perhaps I shouldn't eat so many sunflower seeds, or perhaps I should eat more broccoli), but I'm looking at my dog's crap (did he eat one of my son's plastic toys or does he have worms.... nope not moving, must be plastic), and my son's crap. (There was a point when it was cute... green and stank like my wife's stale boob juice - then he started eating solids and it was just foul human feces all over again). I think I have a rat in the garage. How do I know that? Because I see it's crap.

Whatcha doing honey?
"Oh nothing. Just sweeping rat crap and laying traps. When that's done I'm gonna sit down and take a crap. Get some reading done." :eyebrow:

Eventually, my wife and I will be in a diaper and someone else will be dealing with my crap, but until then, it's official. I'm up to my elbows in crap, so I must be an adult. I'm living the dream baby. Living the dream. :scowl:

one of the funniest, and foulest, posts i've ever seen.

as far as when you become an adult is concerned. it changes for different people, it would be stupid to put labels on it - as these labels will, more often than not, not hold true to the vast majority of people. It happens when you're ready to let it happen.

No sooner, no later.

In my opinion, at least.

True. That and crap. ;)

I'm about to turn 27 and I still don't feel like an adult... I actually read an interesting Link Removed that says that adults don't even exist anymore. I think I'd have to agree-- I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to stay a kid forever :-)
