Not a lot of love here for maple and matching, but I don't think my Jake would look nearly as nice with a plain maple headstock.

When do you think a matching headstock does not look good?

Initially I didn't like any of them. But over time they kinda grew on me. But it does depend on the bass. Some it works with, while others look unfinished if it isn't. Heres some examples. Now that P bass looks great. But when you stick it next to the Vintage II and Stingray the headstock looks unfinished. Yet if it were painted I'd probably think it was "odd".... That G&L doesn't take pictures well, but its stunning in person - headstock and all.

Bought this in March. Not that big of a deal but I wish the headstock was gloss black.
I love matching headstocks - they were a must-have when looking for my Jazz basses. The big no-no for me is when an overly-orange headstock tint clashes with a maple board. Example below. Horrible.
I don’t like matching or painted headstock when you remove the tuner’s bushings and paint peels off ! Grrrr !!!
I would never want a sunburst headstock to go with a sunburst bass.Or, a tort headstock to go with a tort PG.

You know something... That actually doesn't look half bad.
I would stick with the black PG, though. 
Hadn't actually thought about it until now, but I'm pretty sure that not a single one of my 9 basses has a "matching" headstock as described here. So it must not be something I'm attracted to. Now, that having been said, a couple of those basses have the headstock finished the same way as the body and neck in a uniform wood or enamel finish, and four of those basses are headless. 
When the fretboard is maple, I think it looks better with matching block inlays.
It's always looks good. Way baletter than wood headstock.

seriously, i like about all of the matching headstocks i see, in this thread and in the real world. it's not the first thing i think about or notice, but i think headstocks are great with a match, and great without. i'm not as fired up about it as some apparently are....but i harbor no grudges, nor any ill will!
Correct answer is a matching headstock always looks good.
