When do you think a matching headstock does not look good?

Depends on the color. Like it on some old Jazz basses, still think blacked out Stingrays are cool, lots of others too, but those were always my favorite. Never had one though.

Never like it with a maple fretboard. Just looks wrong to me. If it is any type of burst and that is matched on the headstock it is also in the dislike column for me.

then you'll hate this sweet playing pj refin...the HS was just too naked imo, i had to, i was on a roll, i was feeling creative, i had extra paint etc.etc.etc.:smug:

my first hondo P had a matching head...thought nothing of painted HS back then..It's only since i became a TB snob that i'd even question it.:laugh:

In my opinion (aka fact) I prefer not to have 3 different colors. Headstock matches body, ok. Headstock matches finger board, ok. I just get confused with painted body, dark finger board, maple headstock. To my eyes that’s where it looks “unfinished”.
I’m fine with a one piece neck that isn’t painted on top. But a light paint colored body, rosewood board, maple head is disorderly.

FWIW I have some guitars and a bass like that and it’s not like I’m afraid to play it. It’s just aesthetics.

That’s not too riled up?

I know it's not a bass but these Godin acoustics have a tort headstock facing that matches the pickguard and it looks amazing. The tort material they used is very high quality, so they have the wow-factor of the actual materials going for them, but it's pretty cool.

They're also very nice guitars, but, in the spirit of full disclosure, a couple of years ago I nearly bought one of these used from my local Music-Go-Round because the tort headstock looked so awesome.

It is a full match. The goal is to match the body, not replicate the body. It uses the same colors as the body burst, inasmuch as the burst extends into the headstock at the same rate as it extends into the body. It obviously doesn't extend far enough into the headstock to use all the colors used on the body, but that doesn't mean the headstock burst doesn't fully match the body burst.
