My only problem with this is when folks brag about being "brutally honest," and throw tact and good taste out the window. They also tend to dish it out, but not be so good at taking it. And when they're wrong, they're too proud/stubborn to admit it.

A lot of young guys claims to always tell the truth about what's on their mind.
With time you learn that it isn't a quality at all.
You're not that important. Nobody gives a damn about your opinion and they didn't ask for it.
In other words you're just being obnoxious and egoistical.
People who are brutally honest get more satisfaction out of the brutality than out of the honesty.

Most excellent quote. Brutal honesty is good if you're confronting someone who is clearly on a bad path and no one else will speak up. But most of the people I know who declare themselves to be "brutally honest" are just opinionated folks who like to hear themselves pop off, and more often than not, they're wrong.
Its all good, I actually told her about doing so, and she didnt mind, and I got permission to do it again! So, uh, when you making that trip to SoCal?
First, I've never seen artwork from a child that was not nice. They are kids fercristsakes, why would you judge them, or their art, by any other standard? Also, I take it you've never seen any American primitive folk art? I've seen plenty of it that looked like it was done by a kid with basic motor skills issues, bearing 6 figure price tags.
Second, if a kid asks me if they can be an astronaut, president, dog catcher, etc, I'll tell them this is America and if you work hard and have good health and good luck, anything is possible.
But then again, I've always been a glass slap full kind of guy where kids are concerned so I tend to turn any conversation with a child into an opportunity to give them some positive reinforcement.

Also, I'm sure you know this already but a piece of art (or anything really) selling for a high price doesn't necessarily mean it's good, it just means someone wants it and has the money to pay for it. I saw one painting that was a canvas painted black with 1 vertical line and 4 or 5 horizontal lines of varying colors hanging in a museum. I asked the tour guide how much she thought it was worth and she said "Easily over $10000." Then there were these paintings done by a baby splashing some paint on a huge piece of paper and those were selling for no less than $6000 each. My opinion? They all sucked.To the first point, if the "artist" is an adult, I'll judge it from that point of view, but if a child shows me something they poured their heart and soul into, it's beautiful...at least to me.
As for the second point, don't even get me started on what I think about the foolishness of people who spend stupid amounts on "art".
Not to say there is not some great art in this world, but like music, for every great song their are legions of turds, and so many clueless folks with money spend big bucks on "art" to flaunt their big bucks. it's not about the merit of the piece it's about being able to poke one's boobies out and say "Yeppers, that one cost me a cool million."
Like "investing" in old basses, I'm not near educated enough or sophisticated in my personal tastes to risk big money on what could well be a fake or something those with the knowhow to tell the difference would consider a piece of offal instead of a piece of history/art.

I remember my trip to the MOMA in NY when I was a junior in high school. They had some cool stuff, but they also had a lot of things (a painting with three different shades of black, a pink fluorescent light in a corner, etc...) that were crap. I actually turned to my dad at one point and in my best tour guide voice said, "And over here we have a piece by Mr. Matthews. At first this glance this looks like a piece of art to the untrained eye, but no, this is in fact just a piece of crap on a stool."
I suppose we're just different people. To me, regardless of age, crap is crap. However, I'm not so heartless as to crush the dreams of children and many friends by telling them that, lol. Of course, that isn't to say that a kid can't become a better artist with practice. The biggest difference between a child's art and an adults is that one is likely make me laugh while the other is more likely to make me facepalm
