Well Christianity itself is middle eastern in origin so none of that (what you're saying *or* what you're saying "they" are saying) makes any sense.
I think this is the wrong forum for concerns like this.
If you were in a Bow tie wedding band and showed up in comfy shorts and pink sneakers the bandleader would have a problem with appearance and your future employment. This kind of thing is unfortunate and needs to be adressed for sure but inviting folks to ridicule what they don't understand is not good.
This reminds me of why Paul was bummed out about Christians suing each other in a worldly court. There are appropriate ways to handle things spelled out amongst believers.
This is not to say it should be swept under the rug but there are wiser ways to deal with it Than the "Court of Public Opinion".

Okay, let's take a look at this situation without the religious element, hopefully before we cross a line and the Mods are forced to close this thread. What would our responses be if:
The OP was asked to play at a family friendly bar & grill that has live blues music one night a week. It's his first gig at this particular venue and the only info he got from his bandleader that booked him was a setlist and and time for soundcheck. As he's setting up his gear one of the line cooks is walking around and notices his bass, remarking that it "Looks like a kid's bass." Later the bar & grill manager asks him to move his pedalboard out of sight since it's appearance clashes with the venue's theme. The OP complies and plays the gig without any further issues from the staff at the bar & grill.
Should the OP never return to that venue again for one off-hand comment from someone that doesn't have any regular interaction or decisions with the band's they hire or over a miscommunication from his bandleader about the nature and theme of the bar & grill? Or should the OP decide whether or not the overall experience was worth returning again and adjust his/her approach accordingly?
I'm simply saying that many responses seem to be filtered through our perception of what a church SHOULD be and not what it actually sometimes IS.
That being said...if I were the OP and had this or a similar experience a second time at this church I wouldn't be back unless the pay was worth the hassle. YMMV, IME and all that jazz...

I think you also have to keep in mind that sometimes people say dumb things out of nervousness or he possibly read you wrong thinking he knew you well enough to "bust" you about your bass. He also might've been totally out of line.

Dude! Talk to your DAD about this! He's the drummer. Is he a member of the church???? If it were my dad I would be able to say flat out to him "Hey ,Dad. How bout you shown me the part in the Bible where their behavior is acceptable. Otherwise, I won't go back in that building."
Seriously, if your dad is "plugged in" to this church you should be able to talk this out with him. Then perhaps he can go with you to talk this out with them. Your dad just standing by and letting them kick you around ain't cool either.
I can't imagine anyone at my church talking like they did to you. But if they ever did that to my kid, we would have what we call here in the South a "Come to Jesus" meeting. And I don't mean praying with each other.

The skateboard pedal board is kinda cheesy for a church gig, but if I got rude comments like that I'd tell 'em to look for another bass player.
There's nothing wrong with what you're using for basses.
