Where are the Henman-Bevilacqua owners?

Yeah, Tom Bowlus (Bass Gear Magazine) was having a hard time saying they suck for $5,900 without actually saying they suck. Oh, they sound good, but he says they have cheap pickups and electronic components, and a non-durable finish. They are upgrading the finish on the newer ones. He also thinks that, at that price, they should throw a defeatable preamp in there. They have a kind of cool name though.

FWIW, Scotty has: A.) lowered the price, B.) changed the finish, C.) offers more pickup options, and D.) offers a preamp.

I had never heard of them, Which is pretty amazing. I would love to check one out. I doubt I could justify the dough, but that has more to do with my fiscal state than the quality of anything. That is unless Congress and the Prez what to bail ME out because I made some poor investments

I actually got to play Jauqo's earlier this week and really liked it. He's right, the sustain is FANtastic, and just a really nice even, clean tone. The neck had a pretty nice feel to it and wasn't too chunky.

I _was_ a bit surprised by the price just because it _was_ expensive. It had nothing to do with price vs. quality because I'm OK paying for quality (I have an Alembic Epic).

Honestly, It caught my attention so much that I'd be interested in one. However, I have no real justification dropping that much on a bass any time soon.

At least he's trying some innovation instead of buildinga "better" jazz bass and calling it high end, like is so popular now. I'd like to try one, but first he'll have to

E) lower the price more.

In all seriousness, when I saw it in bass player, I thought it was a kick ass $500 bass.

From what I've seen, most of the "innovation" in these basses could be traced to stuff that Bunker/PBC's been doing for a long time.

I played one of the models that was on display at the Chicago Music Exchange a while back, and while it was impeccably executed and played very well, the tone was thin, metallic, and harsh, through all settings. That may be partially attributable to the SWR amplifier that I was playing it through for most of the test, but with the limited control offered by the electronics on the bass, there wasn't much that could be done to improve the sound, and changing amps didn't help much.

To be fair, the example that Ed Friedland demonstrated on Youtube some time back sounded somewhat better than the one I tested, but based on my experience with them, you could do much better for half the price, much less at the full value.

Might explain the drought of owner responses in this thread...:eyebrow:

Where are they Henman-Bevilacqua Owners? - my first thought (not to be disrespectful) is they are all trying to recover from buying such and overpriced Bass.

The design looks cool and unique - like most people here given what is competing with this Bass in that price range - hard pressed to say I could even begin to GAS for one. Unless I had huge amounts of money to burn.

But sounds like you dig it and that is what really matters.

Yep! I don't see much over and beyond what Dave Bunker (Bunker, PBC, Treker, USA Ibanez ATK) has to offer. FTR, second-hand Bunker type instruments were going for ~$600. New, they're listing for $3200. Go figure!
