Where to find bass boxes??

I've searched for threads on this, and there are some, but the old threads either have broken links, are local to a place other than where I live, or provide information that's no longer true.

GC does not give them away in my area. I've checked. They basically told me to get screwed. I'm not sure if FedEx or UPS sells boxes that big. I've looked online and didn't find any.

So the question is where can you buy bass boxes for shipping? I plan on selling my Fender Precision Ultra and would like a box big enough to pad the sides, etc. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks much!

When all else fails, I've used big sheets of cardboard and cut and folded them to make solid coverings for basses in cases. And if you can find sheets of Tyvek to wrap them in, all the better.

I have had UPS pack a bass for me, they have boxes that can do it, if you have one in your area. Not cheap.

Yeah I think I have a box that I might be able to squeeze the case in, but the way these companies throw these basses around now, it's a bad idea not to pad them. On the other hand, these hard shell cases are nicely made, so maybe it wouldn't make a difference.

Have a bass shipped to you. Save the boxes.

Your local "pack and ship" place is likely to have or be able get a guitar/bass box, but these are prohibitively expensive. Ones that will swallow the case are even more challenging to find, and if you do, the box will likely be big enough to tip you over into dimensional weight, so that's bigger bucks yet.

For those of us who live near paper mills, we often have the option of going directly to the source of cardboard, but that may not help you.

Uline sells bass boxes, if you don't mind getting 5 at a time. That's what I've always done. Good boxes.

I grab double or tripled wall vegetable boxes from the supermarkets. Glue two or three end to end, place the bass on too and mark where the Neck rests. Cut out a slot for the neck.

Bass will lay flat and secure. Bubblewrap the bass, extra padding round the edges. Make up a lid,wrap with brown paper.

Is there a shop that sells bicycles in your area? The boxes used to deliver bikes are very sturdy and can be adapted to take a bass in a case. Add extra packing, to fill the spaces, I use sheets of expanded polystyrene, cut everything to to size and tape up.

FedEx will supply box and pack a bass for you for $20. Or buy just the box for $12 and pack yourself.

I go to Sam Ash and pick empty shippers that their basses came in.

I almost always use U-Haul's sturdy Sport Utility box, $5.95. For pricier basses, I double-box with two.

A smaller mom and pop music store might be willing to help you out with a freebie. You may have to catch them a day or two after they have received new stock.

Big box music stores or larger music stores in general tend to receive and ship a lot of instruments so they like to hang on to their boxes when possible. Occasionally you might find one that will sell you a box.

If these options aren't available in your area, a FedEx box seems like the best bet.

+1 on FedEx. They've got boxes that are large enough. They've shipped a few items for me over the years and I'm sure they'd sell you a box you could walk out with.
