Speaking of the classic Smith sound- here is a clip of Gouche played a BT-5 w Gladys Knight and destroying words. IWHO that the sound is fatter than his MTD (or Tobias at the time) sound but I know many players who have gone from Smith to MTD and haven't looked back.

I get my funk from not showering ........just kidding not much of a Funk man here but do love me some Louis Johnson from time to time especially his Quincy Jones stuff my uncle kinda turned me on to it

James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament, Stevie Wonder, The Meters. are the foundation of Funk IMO
Many include James Jamerson/Motown but to my ears his groove is more R&B/Jazz Blues feel than the others. Of course R&B was Funk's big brother.
Then the full flowering of Funk in the '70's brought so many great bands/players that it began to influence other genres, most notably Rock, Blues and R&B

If Rose Royce and Heatwave are funk bands, then AWB is definitely a funk band!

When I have time, I will post comments from Louis Johnson (from a '70s Downbeat that I still have...unfortunately, I no longer have the issue with AWB on the cover. They did not call themselves a "Funk" band, either. This is the April 8, 1976 issue of Downbeat; if anyone has it & is looking to unload it...I want it!).

The AWB issue of Downbeat has been in my Amazon List for awhile. It goes for $15-$20. I tried EBay...someone selling a Lot of 7 from 1976 for $10. Sold. The AWB issue is 1 of 7 + there's 5 more I don't have.

I read the Bro-Js interview...it is from January 1977. At the time, Louis J was a mere 21. In '77, I was still just a teen & I remember thinking how cocky he was. So, he may not come off so well...and the interviewer (Lee Underwood) is not giving them too many softballs.
