Which 212 cab to get

I like bass. And airplanes.

I'm in the market for a 212 cab, since I can't find a second Accugroove Tri-112L to save my life. But that's the footprint I want. I have it narrowed down to a used Bergantino AE212 or a new TecAmp M212.

I play just about every genre. I use a TexAmp Puma 900 head. With this cab, for bigger gigs, I'd be mostly playing a passive P/J 4 string or my Fender American Jazz Deluxe V. I rarely slap and pop, unless it is needed. I play mostly covers in wedding bands, but also have a fair amount of jazz and fusion/funk gigs, and double on upright a lot. I like a deep low end extension but not muddy, and a more even response across the mids and highs, so I can go either way towards warm vintage or modern funk. Can anyone subjectively compare these two cabs? Thanks.

Thanks. I just shot him a message.
My concern is that, while going modular is attractive, the 212 cab would only be 10-15 pounds more than my Accugroove cab, and probably only $100-150 more. And the single cab would be an easier schlep. Plus, I'm kinda looking for something just as good, but maybe a little different.

If you can find a Dr. Bass 212 used I would grab it, its the most accurate 3 way cab I've come across. I bought this cab 2x and was very fortunate run across it the second time. I missed it dearly. The Aguilar 212 GS would also be a good consideration.

I am ditching the 410, and want a slimmer, taller cab (preferably 4 ohms too). The Aguilar is great, but I haven't seen anything around here (Cincinnati). It's all Genz, GK, and Ampeg in the shops. And all those 212's are wider than I want.

This is how I do vertical 212's.

greenboy fEARless F212. Works for me. I would also check out the Baer ML-212, and the audiokinesis TC-212. Different flavors of great bass cabs.

I've owned a few 212s along the way...

Aguilar DB212 = very nice cab, extremely well built. Very heavy! - and the form factor is like a 410 - and the casters suck. Think I replaced them 2 or 3 times in a couple years of gigging. Warm vintage sound, nice tight end, but with a bit of a bump in the upper mid, which could make it sound a little thin at times to me.

Berg AE212 = got this when it first came out, and never liked this cab. Nice form factor and great construction (it's a berg). The sound was too scooped, lots of deep low end, but lacking in that tight-warm-punchy thing. Lacking in the mids too. Just too extended on the low and high end, and the cab lacked focus. Always felt like I was lost in the mix every time I played that cab.

Berg CN212 = Best of both world for me. Great form factor, light weight, great sound. I went from the Aguilar to the CN. Perfect middle of the road cab small enough (in form factor) for smaller gigs, but big enough (power handling and volume) to handle the big gigs too. Not a super deep low end, but lot's of nice tight bass, lot's of "meat" in the sound. Great mids. Very even across the spectrum!! No nasty peaks or freq bumps. I even use the tweet sometimes, and I am not a tweeter guy!

Also have owned a couple 112s - Aguilar GS112 - too scooped for me, but nice. - Bear ML112 - didn't dig the mid driver thing, a little bigger than I wanted for a "small cab", and always felt like I was hearing the two drivers (although people say the transition is seamless).

I play a few different styles and in different situations. The berg CN212 is a pretty versatile cab and sound pretty good with upright too. Just did a gig 2 weeks ago and provided my cab as back-line. The 2nd band had an upright player (a real bad ass), and it sounded great out front. Pretty much plug and play with good volume.

Good luck on the search. Hope this helps.

.

Exactly what I heard.

Me too! The new EX line does not have the typical Eden sound, otherwise I wouldn't mention them.

btw, as a former AE112 x 2 owner those are cabs that I thought were not Jim's best product.

Thanks. That's helpful. Those Eden cabs look pretty small. I wonder if they are boxy sounding (not deep enough, compensating by exaggerated "high bass"...

I've heard one locally and have one on order myself. It's stated to go down to 42hz and I think that's an honest spec. I suggest you search it here on TB and Google it. I could not find one bad review. I also PM'd several TB EX112 owners before I ordered it and all were still happy users. If you want to wait a couple of days I can give you a hands on report when mine arrives. Believe me, if it sucks I'll say so, I'm not easy to please.

A buddy of mine has the Avatar 212. He uses it with a GK 1001 and it sounds killer. The cabs come loaded with some great sounding Eminence speakers. I have used Eminence speakers whenever I have had to replace any speaker I've ever blown and they always sound better than the factory originals, and I have yet to blow one. I like all the custom options too. I am seriously considering them for my next cabinet
