Which bass should I get?

I'm looking at 2 different basses, both $350. http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend...iden-Special4-Electric-Bass-Guitar?sku=423752 and http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend...ic-Vibe-Jazz-Bass-60s-Bass-Guitar-?sku=519578. Squiers are always kind of iffy, but it's got really good reviews. But, I know a lot of people who have Schecters, and they say they're pretty good, but that one just came out a few days ago, so no reviews. I just don't want to make a bad decision and end up with a crappy bass.

Saying that Squiers are always kinda iffy is complete nonsense. EVERY single CV Squier I have played has been nothing short of amazing for the price. I would take one anyday over the Schecter and over an MIM Fender.

I would go with the Squier. Based on personal experience, the CV series is anything but iffy, they are great basses for the price. I'm also much more of a passive fan, but that's purely personal preference.

I wouldnt buy either myself for that price range. Theres a variety of Ibanez and ESP Ltd basses in that price range that give you more for your money imo.

This is going to sound obvious, but playing both of them would be the best way to decide which one suits you best. If you're buying online, that's going to be tough. They're definitely very different instruments though, so maybe you need to decide based on what sound you're going for.

+1 to what marklaforest said. If you don't have any retailers near you then make the drive to find them. It will be worth your time and some brick and mortar retailers are just as competetive pricewise as MF.

Play'em both first. Personally, I'm really impressed with the Squier CV series. But I've never tried the Schecter.

I agree with all the "play before you pay" voters, but if you can't, I would choose the squier over the schecter any day, and I mean ANY day.

How about a used Carvin? They are great basses, but resale values are low. So you could definitely pick one up for that price.

And while I stand by what I said about "try before you buy", one only needs to look around to see how many people are playing P basses vs. how many people are playing Schecters. There's a reason for that, and it's not just good marketing.

For $350? I know Carvin's resale value is low, but I don't know about that low. I've been keeping an eye out for one to snag on the cheap because I know they are really nice basses and I don't think I've seen one at $350.

That is good advice though if your price range can accommodate a used Carvin. Probably can't get better bang for the buck.
