which bassists have the best distorted tone?

Al Cisneros is the first that comes to mind for me...

I'm not a huge Clash fan, but Paul Simonon has a great distorted sound. "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" is perfect.

Muse also gets some nice, mellow fuzz sounds.

-Nick Thieneman (Breather Resist, Brain Banger, Young Widows)
-Kevin Lamiell (Majority Rule/Haram)
-Not a bassist per-se... but the way that Kurt Ballou (guitarist of Converge) records the bass in his Godcity Studios is the stuff of dreams (Pg99, CurlUpAndDie, Suicide Note, Burried Inside, Trap Them, Rise and Fall... etc)

Jack Cassidy. The Airplane song "Crown of Creation" is a good example, as well as the first Starship album. But really any mid to late-period Airplane stuff is great for that. He used a second amp, and controlled it with a volume pedal. He told me this personally at a show where I was on the bill with him. He said he went thru lots of tubes on that amp....
