which bassists have the best distorted tone?

Jeff Matz on the High on Fire "Death is this Communion" recording has some pretty killer tone! Which makes at least 3 killer bass players that Matt Pike has played with (Matz, Joe Preston, Al Cisneros).
+2 for Geezer on the new album, always love his tone, usually nice and thick. Chris from Muse has a nice tone. Also, there something just awesomely dirty about Lemmy Kilmister's distortion.
I love the distorted bass tone on Sonic Youth's "Dirty", it sounds aggressive, rich and still fat enough, I kind of suspect there was a bit of double tracking trickery involved. Too bad they never really went for such an aggressive rock sound again, but then again, it isn't really their usual style, I suppose.

Absolutely the dirtiest, fattest, most awesome bass tone ever.
Someone here at TB told me he uses two SVT rigs; one clean, one overdriven and faces them toward each other with a mic in the middle. Awesome.

Nate Newton (Converge) Ampeg v4 (Orange adb200 live) thru one 70s 8x10 turned up as loud as it will go then recorded good times

+10 to both of you. Destroyer AND Rock and Roll Over contained Gene's best work IMHO, except 100,000 years on The first album.
Yeah, we best mind our volume level when speaking of such things on Talkbass.
