which cable?

Monster is well -known for its poor reliability. That's why so many people brag about having taken advantage of the company's exchange policy. Who's really being taken advantage of given their pricing and totally BS claims? Bass cable?! :smug::rollno::banghead: What good does their exchange policy do when a cable fails on a gig?

Only Monster cable I've had - a speaker cable - failed with very little use. Extremely poor construction, despite the artifice of being solid.

well i appreciate the input. i just picked up bass. ill be running the cable from a passive fender jazz MIM to a rumble 200. just trying to get a good sounding cable. i was sold on the core one bullet cable but i cant seem to find anywhere that sells them. im also looking sat the VOX cable.. just dont know. everyone has different opinions

I have used many, and built many of my own, but the main one I have used for the last 25 years is a Pro Co Excellines. Lifetime warranty, quality components, various lengths and plug options and can be purchased for a reasonable price.

i think im about to buy one. like you said... $21 bucks for a 20' cable and a lifetime warrenty... cant really beat that. thanks man

A good cable is hype-free, longer than you think you'll need, and costs less than $20. As long as you have a functioning cable, especially when you're just starting out and presumably not even gigging or jamming outside the home, a cable is about the least of your concerns or impediments to playing and developing on the instrument.

In the time it took you to post and read this thread, you could've made a bigger difference to your tone via practice than ANY proper working cable could ever make, much less than ANY cable could ever make on your ability to get gigs or to simply be creative and enjoy making music. The same can be said for virtually all of your gear. Consider what cables and gear the greats used.

To excel on bass remember this; Practice Good, TalkBass bad.

If you must spend extra money on something, let it be lessons.

Bulk Mogami, Amphenol plugs, ..yes..I hear a difference compared to cheap cables, I have 2 Spectraflex, older than dirt, that I use home, they are bulky, and often in my way on a stage, but work perfectly. Mogami by the foot, and Amphenol plugs end up costing me around the same as cheap pre-made cables, with poor, weak connectors, and I can make the length I want. 20footer = $25, a no brainer for me.

I suggest Monster Cable's 'overpriced and no better than the rest' line of products. The money that you overpay this company can help their legal department sue any and all who try to use the word 'monster' in a product name or brand name. I thought about naming my band 'The Monster Blues Band' but why take a chance? Who needs the grief? My pockets are shallow, theirs are deep. Here's just one example of how they roll.

Yep, Monster Cable is the brand to buy. :vomit:

I've read many posts about Monster sometimes not fitting into jacks, due to some of their plugs being slightly larger than normal to ensure a tight fit or some such BS.

Times I've heard or read of that happening with generic cables? Zero.

I was actually glad when my one Monster cable broke, as I was ashamed to have it. A drummer once saw me plugging it in and actually made fun of me for using the brand. That's right, even a drummer knows that brand is an overhyped joke. In his defense his day job is with a major MI company. In my defense, I got the cable for free.

A lot less retailers carry the brand than years ago. Ask a former retailer why. ;)

Great choice. It'll sound as good as you make it.

I often use 20' cables between bass and pedals then another 20' between pedals and amp. Passive bass. Maybe you could hear a difference if I played solo, but in a live mix? It never enters my mind to be concerned about it, other than to make sure I have enough cable to move around and perform well.

The "problem" of a long cable with a passive bass is just one of the many inconsequential things you'll read about here, and possibly throw your time and money at unnecessarily in an attempt to "solve". Seriously, the best thing you could do for your wallet and your bass playing is to never visit here again. There are online lessons. Go spend your time or money there.

Have fun... less talk, more rock!

about to buy a bass cable... would you guys recommend the planet waves circuit breaker or a monster cable? it will be right angled and 20ft. just curious to hear from thise who have owned them
I am and have been using vovox sonorus cables for quite some time now and like them a lot.
I'd highly recommend them!
At the moment I am using reqst cables as well and like them quite a bit.

I have had issues with Lava Retro-Coil coiled cables. Also, be careful about Monster cables. The connector is oversized. Once you start using Monster cables you are kind a stuck with them. Once you start using them, your jacks get widened and other cables will be loosey goosey. At least, that is my experience.

Crazy thing - I just purchased a Phil Jones Bass Buddy from The Bass Place and right there in the user manual, it not only addresses Monster cables directly - it instructs the end user that damage caused to the Phil Jones unit via useage of a Monster Cable makes the warranty null and void.

OP, if pink is your thing, Lava cable is about to throw down the gauntlet with their Memorial Day sale - the pink diamond cable is about to go at 50% off. Not my thing, but the cable specs are decent and I have yet to buy a bad cable from Lava. Invalid Link Removed

The sale code is supposed to go out Friday.

I've never really paid much attention to the "Great Cable Debate", but I'm sitting at work bored and just saw this pop up... I have no suggestion to the OP, as I really don't know what's out here... What I do know is that way back in 1995 I was lurking around at Bass NW in Seattle, and I guess Evan was talking up Monster Cables to me and I drank the Cool Aid and bought an $80+(?) 21' Bass cable. I was a 23 year old kid, what did I know...

That cable is the only cable I have, still... it's been on more gigs with me than any other piece of gear I own... been around the world (a few times), around the US even more, rolled over by cases and amps, stepped on, jumped on, soaked in beer, and forgotten at clubs....

The thing has never broken or given me trouble even once... I don't know if Monster Cables are built the same today, but mine was/is/has been worth every penny.

Just a real-world user review ;-)

Now, according to Murphy's Law, that 20+ year old cable is going to crap out on me on my next gig... :-|
