Which is the P? Which is the J?

I'm gonna guess:
#1 -P
#2- Jazz

I like the first recording better either way.

I think the P is the 1st, 2 jazz, but I see the over all point (one I have been making for years), that a soloed neck pup on a Jazz played closer to that pup can have a pretty decent p like tone. Nail it exactly? No, but certainly close enough that if I can only have oe or the other I take the jazz. Luckily this world provides me with the opportunity for both

Do both have vintage style pickups?

To me the first sounds deeper which suggests P bass. But if it's a J with Model J's or something, that could explain it too.

I’ll go with the #1 P and #2 jazz group.

The grove is very close on both, but the change on #2 sounds more like a Jazz.

1 sounds a bit looser so I'd say that's the Jazz, 2 has a bit more woody low mid growl too which is very P like. They are very close though, but 1 does sound a bit looser to me.

While it wasn't easy for me to decide, I can say that both tones have very clear differences when listened through headphones. To me, bass 2 is growlier and has a bit more mid presence. Mainly based on that, my verdict is:

Bass 1: P

Bass 2: J

This one was a bit difficult for me because the bass isn't super loud in the mix and due to all the other instruments eating up the bass's mids and highs. After listening with headphones, I'd say:

1-P
2-J

The slide at the beginning in 1 is a pretty big giveaway that it's a P in my opinion.

Originally, I thought Bass 1 was the P, but then Bass 2 sounded more like a P. You can make it really difficult to tell, but those low notes really have that ... um clunky sound? I don't know how to describe it...not a bad sound, I just don't have a better word.

I think it's pretty obvious, but I have some decent speakers hooked to my 'puter.

Then again maybe I can't hear for **** and it's the other way around, there seems to be a pretty good split on what's what.

# 1 was defintely a P sound UNTIL I heard #2. No fair, they're EQ to sound alike, but I can hear the J better harmonics ( string resonance) and presence. 1 is J.

Its not "clunky" to me rarisgod, but I think what you're describing is what the bridge pup adds to the low notes - clarity and harmonics. I like reverse P for that.

Bingo.

Another point is to prove that pickup placement (location) plays a much bigger role into the sound than pickup type.

The P is an Alleva-Coppolo, said by many to match the 60s Jazz bass.

The J is a Pensa Jazz with Fralin pickups.
